This has been discussed already in depth on many forums, but this link has some outstanding insights and new information by some of the top players in the industry.

A great read, thanks MM.

Although I agree this is extremely worrying, I doubt boycotting them woud do any good.

All that would happen is domains would sell forcheaper of their employees would get the domains for even less.

Great read Although I've seen many discussions on it. When it comes to possibly boycotting the Auction houses, I tend to lean toward what Peter is saying.

In either case, it's agreed, it's extremely worrying when things like this arise. Because you have to wonder, does the auction house itself own the domain - or is one of the employees driving up the price? < And that's thoughts I'd have even before this all happened, now it's confirmed that it can and may very well happen / be happening.

Sad really.

Strange that they are allowed to do this, it's like auction houses that bid on their own auctions to earn more money (chill bidding) or whatever it's called

Well, lets encapsulate what we do know...

1. GoDaddy, Netsol and Tucows officially don't offer a level playing field by selling domains dropping via them to their official 'marketplaces' - tdnam, namejet, afternic. I'm sure all the major 'drop' services have some kind of sweetheart deal on with various registrars.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=489770

2. This is expressly prohibited by ICANN via the RAA.
Quote:
2.3.2 not unreasonably restrain competition and, to the extent feasible, promote and encourage robust competition;
Quote:
3.7.5 At the conclusion of the registration period, failure by or on behalf of the Registered Name Holder to consent that the registration be renewed within the time specified in a second notice or reminder shall, in the absence of extenuating circumstances, result in cancellation of the registration by the end of the auto-renew grace period (although Registrar may choose to cancel the name earlier).
Quote:
3.7.9 Registrar shall abide by any ICANN adopted specifications or policies prohibiting or restricting warehousing of or speculation in domain names by registrars.
3. GoDaddy does not even allow transfers for 60 days after a whois change, another thing expressly prohibited by ICANN. what they've done is to make it mandatory for you to agree with this, rather than following the spirit of the letter.

I have to say that I agree with you. Registrars have been taking advantage of their positions and ignoring rules for far too long. I'd love to see ICANN institute a policy where they required the registrars to give up all their names that aren't directly related to the operation of their business. Major portfolios would be up for grabs overnight, it'd be like christmas.
