Overture Inventory, Classic Domain Research Tool, Shuts Down

See here: Yahoo Officially Discontinued The Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool

Thoughts? Reminiscinces?

I remember Monte Cahn, Moniker.com's CEO, coming in and sharing with us a bit on how they appraise names, and I believe he referred to that tool. Also remember buying names with 100K+ ovt !! Turned out they got no traffic cuz by then ovt was already a dead piece of crap, but what did I know? lol

Luckily I have the seo clients (Ice.com / Diamond.com / TheBusinessCardCreator.com etc.) to not need to rely on flipping $100 profits here and there anymore.

(BTW, offtopic, but anyone here hooked up with the domain name trade press? I was talking to Ice.com/Diamond.com's CEO and he wanted to share some more details to give the backstory to the Diamond.com purchase from a little ways back. )

For you domainers looking for a replacement, try Google's 'traffic estimator sandbox' tool. (No link cuz Google = Big Brother and I hate Big Brother.)

Just a basic question from an SEO newbie...

In researching traffic potential for a given word, there seems to be hugely differing estimates, depending on what you look at...

eg

..Take the word "discounts", for example...
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=488696

Google's 'Traffic Estimator Sandbox' tool shows 2035 - 2544 est clicks/day (all regions)

Wordtracker shows 390 est searches/day - for the same word.

Huge difference....Could you give me some guide on how to evaluate potential traffic possibilities for any given word/phrase, from these tools?

Many thanks.

.

Another major blunder by Yahoo - IMO.

It could have been a major branding and marketing tool for them.

They could have turned this tool into the standard tool for all developers, business, mom and pops, and more that wanted to gain insight into web searches.

It already was the one that everyone wanted to use and then they decide to kill it instead of exploiting it.

Unbelievable really.

Any thoughts about the huge difference in estimated search results, on the same word please...?

I'm trying to make sense of which tool would be the more accurate guide.

Thanks.

You're dead on the mark. Every day I'm more and more dissapointed with the company. They increase t3h suk level and don't do much else really.

@Domain Talker - Compare estimates for different words from a single tool. Not estimates for the same word on different tools. Wordtracker gets data from third tier engines; it's not as reliable. Google messes with its own data though, so don't trust it 100% either.
Use both tools to compare the relative strengths of keywords. E.g. discounts vs gas discounts on G, and discounts vs gas discounts on WT.

Brujah, I believe they have similar tools inside, but those don't show accurate numbers, just a score out of 5 the way adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal does.

@ DT etc. - NP.

Yahoo had lots of opportunities with overture...but they decided to shut it down. A lot of missed potential in my opinion
