how worried are you with your names and snow bill?

Hi

Curious what your view points are on this important issue for us and .tv names.

Scary for me and I am sure it is scary for everyone. Geo owners should be worried, every domainer should be.

Let's hope it dosent pass!

Not worried.

I really only have one that would be on iffy ground. The rest are generic enough, that I don't believe anyone would ever challenge them.

Not worried.

This is my logic - for right or wrong.

Before the Charlotte city govt comes after Charlotte.tv, they are also going to have to go after the large newspaper company that owns Charlotte.com.

That is not going to happen. Deep pockets. Bad Press. Supreme Court ruling.

Just b/c a bill passes in Congress doesn't mean it will constitutional scruitny.

Any lawyer can make a case that .gov (Charlotte.tv) was designed for public usage. It will be harder to make a case for Charlotte.com or Charlotte.tv.

Also, I seriously doubt the city of Baltimore is going to have much success forcing BaltimoreLegal.net (which has a large sign on the Baltimore Beltway) give up their domain without a legal slugfest.

Some good comments. I guess anything can happen. If it does happen it surly would have a tripple down effect in the domain industry, going from domainers first, registrations possible, parking companies, lawsuits and etc.

I just think its a bit far fetched and its not just the geo market that would get hit hard.

Keep fingers crossed.

I think I am safe but you never know. These days any common word or phrase, no matter how "generic", can get a registered Trademark, and then be abused by the holder of that mark.

Personally I think it is just more of the same: Big government sticking its nose into areas it doesn't belong. There are already remedies at law for TM infringement. IMHO, Snowe is a total airhead. She has always been an airhead, so this is nothing new. The bigger problem is educating the people that elect people like Snowe to office - the proximal cause.

Percentage worried: ZERO

Bills are passed to appease some lobbyists that get paid by other groups to pass things. It's a stupid vicious circle of American society. New laws get passed fairly regulary...while I am grateful we are a nation of law...there comes a point where all the laws passed can't be enforced. America is at that point.

At best they would target a couple big time people to scare the little people.
