I prefer .com and Domains which I could develop if I can't find a buyer.

Each domain "niche" provides for unique opportunities and challenges, IMHO. Spend some time in the Appraisals Forum "observing" how people view and assign their opinions of domains' valuations and potential End user uses, and Wholesale/Reseller sales figures. They are opinions, but these opinions are based on each appraiser's personal knowledge, observations, and experiences. This is one way to learn more about what TO register, and what to avoid possibly registering.

Observe, at first.
Best of Luck.

It doesn't really matter what extension you have (except .ws and .cc, hehe) if you have a top fold dictionary word domain name (these sometimes can go for thousands of dollars on eBay, perhaps more depending on the name).

Otherwise, your best bet lies in the .com and the .net.

Try to limit your abbreviations, and arcane words, and try to make the domain catchy / easy to remember. Ask yourself, if I was a ______, would I want this domain? (insert whatever industry occupation your domain is relative to)

Mix and match words, sometimes they make sense, sometimes they don't...

Study the "DNA Valuation Model" to get a basic idea of what may make a domain name valuable.

Do a search on the net for "domain name valuation models" and you should find a few more models that approach from a different angle but they all usually have a similar basis.

Good suggestion.

Also a good tool for estimating demand for certain search terms is the Overture suggestion tool. You can learn how to use it here
