Help! FutureGas.com

Hi,

I am looking at buying this domain via sedo, the owner wants $2400 for it, do you think his asking price is fair? If you had the money, and wanted the domain for development would you purchase it at the requested price? Any feedback appreciated...

Not too outrageous, but certainly not cheap. Close enough to "fair enough" for an end-user price - that is IF I wanted to develop on just that particular name, and IF I had the money ... I dunno. Is it really that much better than alternatives which might be had for less, or even for reg fee? ie, GasOfTheFuture / FutureFuel / NewGas / NovaGas etc etc etc ... (Maybe put up a post in the "Domains Wanted" section here and see what options might present at a more reasonable price - should see at least a few decent ones closer to $200, I'd expect).

Personally, I would rather own GasFutures (different connotation) ...

PastGas has a certain ring to it too ...

Here is what I found out about past gas domain sales, and futuregas.com seems to be better than most on the list, based on asking price which I am trying to get lower...but is very hard when you get a response like this, and when Gas prices, and the future of gas is in the news on a daily basis. When someone responds like this, they kind of have a point on fair valuation of their domain? no...? Especially based on the energy markets, and increase in domain valuations?

CheapGas.com $150,000 Jun 05 Private

Mangas.com $61,000 Jul 07 Sedo

Gas.mobi $9,100 Dec 07 Sedo

GasMeter.com $7,077 Dec 06 SnapNames

MGas.com $4,000 Jan 08 Afternic
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/464158-futuregas-com.html

IndustrialGas.com $3,888 Aug 07 Afternic

BlueGas.com $3,500 May 06 Sedo

GasCreditCard.org $2,950 Mar 07 Moniker

VaneGas.com $2,488 Dec 07 Afternic27

GasCrisis.com $2,488 Mar 07 BuyDomains

AmericanGas.com $2,470 Mar 07

GasToGo.com $2,300 Nov 06 BuyDomains

CompressedNaturalGas.com $2,255 Apr 08 Afternic

LiquifiedNaturalGas.com $2,100 Mar 07 BuyDomains

Thanks for your advice filter, especially on these domains --> GasOfTheFuture / FutureFuel / NewGas / NovaGas .... but they are all taken over 5 years ago. I know GasFutures would be good, but that is a commodity that sells on the nymex, in most likely trillions of dollars in trades per year now, and that will cost me $xx,xxx if not more, seems energy domains are very much in play right now, and if you want them, you just have to pay up.

Personally, no I wouldn't buy it as the name doesn't make much sense, but that's just me. Also, we use Petrol, not Gas.

BTW, FuturePetrol.com is available for hand reg if you are looking for those types of names

Well good news, seller has commented he might consider an auction if I counter offer....... to put it at auction at the $xxx offer price at sedo. So If I win, I win otherwise, I will have to fight off the competition with what I can afford to bid. Thanks for everyones advice, on here, much appreciated. I just hope I am doing the right thing. The value I see in the domain is, gasfutures are a commodity, I will never be able to afford that domain, so futuregas works in a similar concept, as well the future of gas prices is very phrased sentence. It could also be referred to as a replacement energy source, in futuregas. Sometimes you just gotta roll the dice... I guess.........

Ye, I think this is a bit overpriced and unless well developed, it doesn't have big potential. As said before, post on this forum, you will probably get something more reasonable.

Good luck but you should probably edit out your post just in case some joker comes along and decide to go on a bidding war with you.

My first thoughts when seeing the domain before reading the thread was that it'd make a great name to discuss alternative energy.

Thanks, for the advice.... I totally agree, but there are many seasoned domainers on this board, and their advice is priceless... via sedo I have 7 days to consider the sellers counter offer, and try and make a deal happen. I think I am over paying a bit, but some names you just have to have. Thanks, for all the advice...really appreciate it.

Depends on what you intend to do with it, do you plan on developing it or trying to re-sell it ?

Have you checked snapnames/namejet to see whats dropping, you may find a better deal/name there.

It's hard to justify paying a premium for a name with insignificant search volume (keyword directory = 4, wordtracker = 0) unless there is an obvious and compelling business need for the name. If that need exists, the buyer should acquire the name as quickly and quietly as possible to achieve the business need, discourage competitive interests and prevent suggestions of insincere promotion.

I want to secure the name for future development, also as an investment as to what is happening in the oil & gas industry on a daily basis, and going forward. These are past sale prices, some even a few years ago when oil was $70. I am trying to figure out what this domain is valued at, with a little premium priced in.

If it's something you're interested in and something you're interested in developing, I say go for it

low XXXX really isn't that much if you start thinking about how much you'd need to make off your site to make that back. Even at $150/month ($5/day), you'd have the entire purchase price paid back in about a year. When you start comparing that to how long it takes most real world business startups (eg. restaurant franchise) to pay back their initial costs, sure seems like a bargain to me if this is all you need to build your empire

Names of equal value are available for reg fee. An experienced domain investor would not sink $xxxx into a name of this caliber without a solid monetization or resale plan. OP has expressed neither and no one else has offered anything of substance. Voluntary disclosure of a name target in a public forum is a very unusual buy side strategy. OP has responded positively to high appraisals and ignored low ones to a degree rarely seen in sales or owned appraisal threads, and unheard of in a thread seeking buying advice. Gas is not in the future, it's in the room.
