The value of Spanish domain names.

I'm starting to look at Spanish domains now. There seems to be some good deals to be had in that market but I would love to hear some opinions from others.

As one of the top three languages in the world I am surprised sometimes by the prices of Spanish domain names. I recently picked up a single word .com in Spanish with decent OVT for less than a grand. I would not have been able to touch the English version for less than twenty grand or more.

I'm very happy to add that name to my collection and I am thinking of picking up more, but before I put too much money into it, I would love to hear some opinions on why or why not that would be a good idea.

Absolutely it'd be a good idea IMO. Spanish is one of the top languages spoken in this world & there has been some good Spanish sales as well if you have a look at the history.

From what I see so far, looks like it is not a bad idea for me to get into the Spanish market.

I have dabbled with a few, but haven't sold anything significant. First, I think you need to understand the language differences and that all words don't directly translate to the same thing, particularly when you combine words. Word order and tense can make something that looks good be worthless in translation.

Also, even though Spanish is spoken by a lot of people, in general they aren't the most wealthy countries or people overall to invest huge amounts for a domain. There is huge growth in the US Spanish speaking population though which corporations may want to exploit at some point.

Here are a few I own with comments

puertos.info (ports)
aviso.info (warning)
agua.cc (water)
puertas.info (doors)
libre.ws (FREE - as in freedom or liberty... not as in no-charge, which is "gratis" This is how some words don't directly translate the same as a word translator might indicate)
caballeros.info (horsemen, gentleman, knight)
gato.us (cat)
viejo.info (old)
aeropuertos.info (airports - I've had a few low-ball offers on this one, but wouldn't consider less than $1k)
LosEstadosUnidos.info ("The United States" - A few low-ball offers on this too)
LosEstadosUnidos.net (ditto above)
medicaciones.info (Medications)

Don't trust online translators, i've picked up dozens of spanish and other various language domains because google translator said they were good keywords, but most of them ended up being partial phrases or didn't mean much without context, or meant something completely different than I thought.

I've given up on foreign languages, it's too hard to value a domain and optimize for traffic if you don't understand the language.
