There is nothing wrong with long urls...

the phrase bigger is better can at a lot of times be applied to urls...
To prove my point oddities such as WirelessStockTrading.com , ForSaleByOwner.com and AsSeenOnTv.com all sold for 6 and 7 figures...

1). what would most people rather have? a short vaction or a long vacation?
2). would most people rather have a big cash flow or a short cash flow?
3). what would most guys rather have? a short penis or a long penis?

yes i know the phrase kiss.. keep it short and simple. but that phrase was invented by a pencil dick accountant !

The following 'shorter' versions can easily sell for several times the examples you cite:

Wireless.com
Sale.com
TV.com

Everyone (even the owners of awesome names like sex.com) has a price, but they have to be truly mind-boggling numbers. At this point, only major corporations and rich oil barons have the $ for such acquisitions.

The point is that the "longer is better" theory is simply not true for domains in most cases.

True. Very true. It would be cool to have a domain like broad.com or band.com. hell... why not even broadband.com ? lol out of those 3 which would be worth more in value? lol

Although the longer urls will not have the name value of the single word, short names, as Apollo points out, some developers like the longer, descriptive names for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). They are not focusing upon inherrant name value, but rather, popular keywords that will enhance their search engine ranking and, hence, site traffic.
Verifiable traffic=sales=money=sell the site and/or domain for big bucks if successful. Single words have the advantage of covering more ground, ie showing up more often in seaches, and are highly brandable because they form short, generic, universal domain names, that are easy to remember. And, they are rare, wheras multiple word names have almost limitless possibilities.

You got me, Trebor. Broadband.com could very well be the most valuable of the three, although Band.com could possibly give it a go. By the way, I moved this thread to domain discussions, since there is no actual domain being posted for appraisal by the domain owner, as required for this area.

The more you type, the great the chances of a typo happening. Apart from that, I think supercalifagilisticexpialdocious.com is okay.

Yes, but how many longer domains are there that are worth big bucks. There are more shorter ones than longer
