dot Net vs dot Org?

For the sake of this debate, let me just say that I own the dot net and dot org versions of this domain. The dot com is owned by a large company that has owned it for years and isn't looking to sell it. It looks like it would take in the $xx,xxx range to acquire it, which it would not be worth that much to me.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/432338-dot-net-vs-dot-org.html

Which would you use as your primary domain? Dot Net or Dot Org? Lets say for example that you are going to be using it as a site to manage and host your domain portfolio (and also as an e-mail address for WHOIS). May eventually become a business. If the business is successful, obviously I would then go after the dot com, but for now getting the dot com isn't possible.

Thanks to anyone that takes the time to share their thoughts!

.net for busines, .org was essentially for organisations such as non profits, charities etc etc initially, although this has become blurred over the years. Personally I'd go for the .net in your scenario.

Its not about liking or disliking one from the other.
You need to identify the type of business / organization.
.org's are specific to organizations. If you are targetting to develop a non profit organization then .org is apt.
If it is a commercial business, then obviously .net suits better.
In your case, .org is more apt as you are looking at a business which is commercial in nature.

Thanks for the input guys! Looks like it is currently split down the middle at 2-2

I know the dot net is traditionally the #2 choice, but the dot org kind of sounds good. Plus I think it is easier to remember that it "isn't dot com" when it is dot org, where as the dot net and dot com are fairly interchangeable in the mind of people typing in a URL manually.

I'm an end user, my recent purchases.

tentrentals.net
northernvirginia.net
lawnmaintenance.net
bathroomremodeling.net
landscapercontractors.net

Got an offer yesterday on weddinggown.net that I own.

so I guess .net is my vote.

.Orgs are good for nice keyword or product/service domains if you can find and get them when the .com and .net are taken. But for your purposes, as you have the name in both extentsions, use the .net and forward the .org to it! .Net just sounds more 'business' like. .Org just sounds, looks, and is known to be (though it is used otherwise), for none commercial uses.

I've been buying/picking-up some nice keyword .orgs lately, but would go for the .com or .net if the choice was there.

Also, keep stats, and if you should see more traffic coming off the .org, switch.

The .net w/o question unless your name is fit for an organization or a nonprofit.
But truth be told, I'm really feeling the .org extension.

I'm not a fan of using .org for anything commercial. General info sites, yes, but if you're selling or promoting things then I'd go .net

Wow, thanks for the input everyone! It looks like more people prefer dot net, but I'm a little surprised just how divided this is.

This gives me a lot to think about! Any additional opinions are welcome.

.net kinda sucks for stuff other than asian and hosting etc. I believe that is the extension with the biggest traffic leak to .com

.org sucks for stuff that can't be associated with a group idea. Product, service, activities etc. names work as long as they can represent a group.

So in answer to the thread question, it ain't that easy a choice without know the name. One is no better or worse an extension just flat out without application.

I'd take .net, I just can't imagine using .org for anything other than non-profit organisation...
can't believe those people who would choose .org over .net for business...
