Don't you just hate it when...

...you find a domain thats available (and you think is great!) and go off to do your research and sleep on it for 24 hours and when you come back its been regged. Or is this some terrible noob mistake I've made!

Makes you wonder if someones been observing your searches or if its plain bad luck. Also its a bit like forgetting to buy your lottery tickets you'll forever wonder if it will go on to be the next vodka.com
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/421925-dont-you-just-hate-it-when.html

Anyway it happened to me with Goal.fm (thought it was good anyway - I will stop this .fm obsession soon enough), has it happened to you and if so what domain was it?

Cheers, Paul

It happens all the time. Someone else gets the same idea and registers it before you (maybe they sat on it 24 hours earlier). After all, you're essentially competing with the millions of other people out there in coming up with that name and registerig it first.

But it could also be front running if you happened by the wrong registrar.

I never meant to imply anything I guess it was more bad luck than anything, I was more curious if it had happened to others when they had procrastiated over a potentially good domain.

I guess the other question os when you get more experienced you instinctively know whats good and not so you buy immediately.

I hate being a noob!

Register your names with a company like Dynadot that has a four day grace period. Then you can register the instant you think a name might be good and take your time researching it.

Give it 4 days. If it was someone monitoring your search then they will probably let it go after that and it will be available to register again.

Domaintools made an implication on their blog sometime back that its possible that Verisign is selling their data (regardless of registrar your using to check availability) if this is the case, Goosters suggestion about the 4 day drop is probably likely. Its probably a taster and I would try to be a bit patient and cross your fingers.

Dynadot is good for giving 5 day grace period, but in the OP's case this is not valid, since it was an .fm. Grace periods are valid for gtld's.

I think this was pure bad luck, since my searches with Moniker are good, and most front running occurs on .com names. People cannot taste .fm (afaik) and tasters won't do front running on .fm domains.

Do what Gooster told you, but in the meantime, don't search the domain name, don't go to the domain name, don't tell anybody about the domain name, don't even think about it. When the 4 (I would wait 5) days have gone by, then check.

It happened to me once. I did my search for that one domain on "DomainTools" but didn't register it right away. One hour later it was registered by someone else. Apparently, they were just tasting the domain and then dropped it after 5 days. That happens all the time. I don't use "DomainTools" any more, but using "Moniker" instead. I checked plenty domains with "Moniker" and they all were still available after many weeks. However, there is no guarantee that nobody is monitoring your searches. I normally do not register domains right away either, since I'd like to do some research on them first. Besides, I used to register domains right away in the past, however the next day I was not sure if those domains were worth buying on the first place. In my opinion, if you think the domain has some potential, you should grab anyway and not take the risk loosing it forever. Good luck!

I've had it happen quite a number of times. Always hated it but it was my fault for not regging it straight away.

Wait out the 'tasting' period and it's very likely that you'll see it being available again.

Happened to a couple of names I checked few days ago, they're available now again.
