Official Ge-ne-ric Key-word.com thread

Most of us dream

of owning top caliber keyword.com names like Business.com or Diamonds.com or Vodka.com, of having the foresight fifteen or even just ten years ago to grab these domains for reg fee and hold on to them. Dream on, keep domaining, hopefully the day will come when you are successful and you can put together the cash to bring one of these domains home. But there's still some that money won't buy because the name is the Internet identity/official website of a large company/corporation. Today you'd be hard pressed to find a dictionary word that's the least bit common, available to register as a dot com.

) got me thinking about this. Personally I think the w-o-r-d-s.com format (hyphen between each letter) is not bad if the word isn't too long, no more than 5 or 6 characters. After that the domain has got too many hyphens making it tedious to type & lose most of its appeal to developers.

Key-word.coms where a hyphen is placed strategically within the word seem to be very pronounceable and memorable. If the word has more than one English syllable, I usually try to put the hyphen between the syllables for the sake of pronouncability. A quick way to figure out the syllables of a word is to pronounce it slowly and every time your jaw drops is the start of a new syllable, if you know what I mean.

Take Repair.com for example. It's been registered since 1995. It's redirected to a company and doesn't appear to be for sale.
A dictionary (try http://thefreedictionary.com/) would come in handy here. I look up 'repair' and any good dictionary should show the word like this.

The dot · separates the two syllables of 're' and 'pair'. So I checked re-pair.com for availability and yes! it was available (I registered it haha .. re-pairs.com & r-e-p-a-i-r.com were gone).
If somebody had to say my domain over the phone, it wouldn't be hard to pronounce it naturally "Re dash pair dot com"

Of course many words have only one syllable (like 'clean') or have more than two syllables (like history).

For the words with more than two syllables, I usually just put the hyphens between the first and second syllable. Like history ..
the syllables are his·to·ry. So I check if his-tory.com is available (it is and I didn't take it, go reg it!). I [personally] wouldn't bother putting hyphens between all the syllables because it's not just linguists that are going to look for your domain.

You'll notice if you look around a fair lot of hyphenated key-word.coms are already taken actually. Some have been regged for several years.

Key-word.com domains are very brandable (memorable & pronounceable) and end users will come after them! I don't really know how much

i think only works for 4 letter words so balanced and obvious on looking what it is;

eg:

LO-FT.com
LA-ND.com

can be branded up ok. best to develop one or two imo

Balanced is best, and memorable.
Its why L-L-L.com are so much better than L-LL or LL-L

True blanced it good, I think my hel-p.com is good because a logo could be made with the p sort of falling of the rest of the word with a hyphen in between, very fitting for the word help. But other than that I am a fan of your kind of 4 letters with hyphen in the middle, I have my fair share of them too
