Awful Afternic.com is selling stolen domains?

I heard Afternic was selling many stolen or unregistered names.

Is it true? Any feedback?

afternic allows domain holders to list domains for sale, and in a setup like that its possible that some of the names are stolen property. I expect this happens even with Sedo, as well. While they do have some responsibility for the situation, its also the buyer's lookout to do his own research, specially for those names that seem priced too good to be true.

Unless Afternic stole them, there is nothing to talk about how Afternic is

Stolen? Maybe for a few. Unregistered/expired/sold names, yes this is always a problem with maintaining a huge database.

How much stolen property do you think is listed on Ebay? Undoubtedly millions of dollars worth. There is no way for an auction venue to police everything users list on it. As always the cardinal rule of commerce applies - Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware).

You have any evidence to support those rumours? For some reason I have a hard time believing that, then again, it could be me just being a little naive...

Sedo is very hard that you must have control over the domain you list.

That's only if the domain you are listing is already in their database, probably listed by its former owner. For most of my new regs, I don't see them making any verification at all.

Agreed with Armstrong. I do not see any verification mechanism in place either when I listed my names for sale.

I have had a few names listed at Sedo and the names had privacy protection activated on them.Sedo had to verify each one of them by having me disable the privacy protection to ensure I owned them.So yes, they do verify their listings.

Agreed! I have discovered names listed on each site that were clearly bogus listings. It is always smart to do your own detective work. Hoever, Sedo does a far better job at policing than afternic does.....errrr....in-my-opinion.

The Thieves Association isn't very good about putting out their official revenue numbers.

It's common knowledge that shoplifters hit stores for merchandise to sell on Ebay and it has been reported endless times in American newspapers. I was frequently victimized when I owned CD Stores as CD's are one of the easiest things to steal and liquidate online. When we would catch shoplifters and hold them for police they admitted more than once that that is how they turned the CD's into cash. It's not Ebay's fault - they have no way to know, but it happens every day. Where do you think some of that brand new sealed merchandise that appears on Ebay BELOW wholesale cost comes from?

KS.com and Indiana.com were but 2 examples on Afternic (I'm sure there are others) where $20K and $50K domains turned out to be stolen.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=40193

Iraq.com and Wifi.com on Sedo were clearly stolen (and have since been removed).

There might be other suspect names on both places even at present. Do your research carefully before buying.

If the domains are stolen..and you pay the money..you get your money back from Afternic, as they don't pay the seller until the name is transferred...so the big deal is?

A lot of times the theft isn't noticed until after the whole process is done, meaning buyer got his domain under his administrative control updated whois, and the seller cashed his check. Then later the registrar reverses the domain transfer, and the crook disappears with the money.

Which is why I think a good escrow company must implement pre-transfer investigation on the domain to reduce the possibility of inadvertently aiding theft. The upcoming Escrow.name service will include this service. (Sorry for the self-plug ... )
