Yahoo drops domain registration price by $20

Not that anyone here would register a regular domain for $15 but Yahoo did something interesting last week - it dropped its domain registration price (which gets mega advertising on their email services) from $35 to $15.

Did you know yahoo uses an australian registrar? Wild.

article at netcraft
Quote:
Yahoo remains a reseller, buying its domains from Australian wholesaler Melbourne IT, which manages the domains. Yahoo isn't saying whether it obtained a better rate from Melbourne IT or has decided to accept less profit per domain to offer a more attractive price, but describes the new rate as a "marketing promotion" rather than a permanent change.

I have a fare client base who are end users, some companies for whom I do Web Development. 90% of my customers don't know that they can register a domain for under $10 easily.
For them domains can be register only at "NetworkSolutions.com" and "register.com" . It's not that they don't know a thing, it is just that they don't think much about domains and prices etc. All they need is a website
The above general trend or thinking is keeping alive companies who charge way high than normal market price.
I feel there should be some regulation to control the price of some standard services on web like domain registration especially.

my 2 cents

That's a pretty good decrease in domains from a big company such as Yahoo, however I think that there are other places where people can find domains for cheaper. But there are still people who register their domains at such services.

Their price although reduced is still expensive and their support is supposedly pretty slow

I wouldn't know anything about their support since I don't own any domains at Yahoo.
