earning a living?

I'm new to this site and domain names in general. I've already bought about 25 domains and like everyone else, think their own domains are super cool. I would like to get answers that i'm dying to find out.

Is it possible to earn a decent living or become rich from dealing with domains? I'm not talking about one time hits, but doing this for a living.

Can the income be respectable just by parking, selling or both? Who's doing well?

Who's having a blast financial wise? I would love to hear from successful domainers. I just want to know that it's possible.

Please, at least one successful person answer. Then I'll know where I stand.

I can't say I'm successful from pure domaining (i.e., just buying and selling undeveloped domain names) or traffic conversion. For most folks, I believe a combination of various income sources - pure domaining, traffic conversion, web development, and web admin - works best to ensure continued, regular income while waiting for the one big hit that you can retire on.

Also, get your domains appraised here.

No BS inflated appraisals you get everywhere else.

Just harsh, horrid, emotionally disturbing truth about your gems.

I know my nice ones ended up selling for 1/4th I paid for them.

But I've since bought a few others and sold them for 10x or more...

uh...I might not want to hear the truth then. I'll just remain hopeful and ask for ridiculously high prices till the names expire.

The truth is, one week can earn you $1000, and another week $1.45 in the domain name business. I have to go with armstrong on this... it's the domain game, plus whatever other side project we decide to do that day For some of us, it's offering information, or selling a product. Some of us are developers that build projects to sell to other people. Some are graphic artists that offer their services - whatever the case may be, there's always a supplement to the domain sales income. Man/Woman can (more often times than not) survive off domain sales alone.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/34242-earning-a-living.html

I am not saying that there aren't folks out there that do it. There is an exception to every rule... this is just my opinion based on my personal experience, and the experiences of those close to me.

I wish you much success-

Jennifer

Skill and a bit of luck!

I have bought some domains and sold them for cheaper than reg fee, however I have also bought some and within a day they have been worth 10x what I paid.

Thats the fun, ups and downs, and like armstrong said, keep an eye open and wait for the big one...

I have to agree with ManicGirl for her astute synopsis of the "road to success" on the Information Superhighway.

I would just like to add that you have to find things that are also FUN to do. If you find something that is fun/fascinating for you, you will work hard without realizing it - and some success will be sure to follow - making it even more fun.

I have found my "niche" area that has been fun and has allowed me to semi-retire from my "day job."

I'm a full-time Domainer, making about the same as I was when I had a real life job, the difference is I get to stay home, work in my underwear, do something I actually like and dont have a boss to answer to.

Theres been a few highs and some lows but in all my dealings and biz has grown over the past 2 years, the future looks better the longer you stick to it.

Havnt hit the BIG ONE yet but you never know what kind of offers you will wake upto come morning...

You're right, Mike. Having "our" choice of workday attire is great. I enjoy working in bare feet. Now I only have to wear shoes and socks two days one week and three the next. I figure one more year and I can clean out my sock drawer for good.

(However, my situation is possible because of affiliate marketing income - I am just getting involved in the domain arena. But, most of all, I am still having fun.)

Those no longer needed socks will make great hand puppets, just make sure they are cleaned first

Armstrong hit the nail on the head, the people I see who are most sucessful with scratching part or all of a living from the net are the ones who draw their income from many different sources.

Thanks for the great replies. I bought some worthless domain names already. Guess I need to buy more experience or fade out if I continue to buy bad names.

I was about to give up all together about six weeks ago. Posted a huge list of domains, clearing out, etc. After a day with no bids on my names here (some as low as 10 bucks), I withdrew it and figured I'd just let em ride out registration.

The following week, what I couldn't give away here for $10, I sold three to parties that visted the domains through type-in. Two names for $200, another for $100. So I just let them ride out and if I sell a few along the way, I can buy a few cases of Dr. Pepper
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=34242

I've made a few decent sales outside of these, but I've not been able to be consistent. I think those that do well hustle and work hard for what they earn and have the contacts. They seem to know the industry and who the buyers are. Mix it all up with a bit of luck!

Yes agree with Jennifer most poeple will supplement thier income with somthing else... It take alot work and for some it may seem hard work and others it might not even seem like work because most are doing what they love..
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=34242

One thing ive never understood is alot of people are in just to much of a rush to learn somthing and give a go they just want instant results.. you dont have to give up your day job right away just learn to balance your time..

Theres one thing you will gain if you succeed or fail.. experience and knowledge

Goodluck..
