i reg a name recently and had a look at the Wayback archives.

the pages are still available.
question: when i buy the name, do i have the rights to
the old pages??

when you buy a house or car, you get all the contents---goodies and the dirt!!
what about a domain name?? the download is still working too!!

chances are you would be fine, however i would talk to the previous owner of the domain about it first.

Unless the rights to any content where given to you buy the seller then the seller should retain the copyright...

Best to confirm it with the seller..

The more appropriate analogy here is renting, I think. So if you rent a house, and discover that the previous owner left his car in the garage, you don't get the right to use the car without his express permission.

I don't think the previous content owner would want you using their copyrighted work, even if they no longer use the name.

Anyway, why do you want the dirt that comes with the house in the first place?

It is best not to use the content unless you have permission from the person(s) who developed it. It is inherently copyrighted just by the fact that is has been published.
