I have a question about new.net??

New.net has about 20 extentions to register that are unofficial tlds. I have read an article on sedo.com that states two of these extentions are going to be an official tld?? I have the article below about lists two of these extentions. These extentions are .xxx and .travel. What do you guys think?

ICANN has announced that, in response to a request for proposals, it has received ten applications for new sponsored top-level domains (sTLD's). This the first stage of ICANN's strategic initiative to move to a streamlined, fully-globalized process for the introduction of new generic TLDs.
An unsponsored TLD operates under policies established by the global Internet community directly through the ICANN process, while a sponsored TLD is a specialized TLD that has a sponsor representing the narrower community that is most affected by the TLD. The sponsor thus carries out delegated policy-formulation responsibilities over many matters concerning the TLD.

The ten applicants listed by ICANN are .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mail, .mobi, .post, .travel, .xxx and two applications for .tel. ICANN begins trials in May, but it is unclear how long the trial period will last. The introduction of the sTLD’s is expected at the very earliest in 2005.

The favourites include .mobi (applied for by an Irish consortium including Vodafone and Nokia), .mail (by a British anti-spam organisation) and .xxx (International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR)

Even if .xxx and .travel become official extensions, there's very slim chance that it will be delegated to new.net. And when new.net loses its bid, none of the existing new.net registrations in these extensions can claim ownership of their corresponding names within the official tld.

New.net can't lose a bid, since they never entered one in the first place. Therefore, there isn't a slim chance of delgation to new.net, but NO CHANCE.

New.net buyers will be out int the cold unless new.et can arrage some deal with the real TLD sponsors to allow their owners some form of trade or priority. It may be in the interest of the new TLD sponsors to solicit current new.net owners to make some sales, and maybe even pay new.net for access to the contacts in the .xxx TLD. The .travel TLD would pretty much exclusive to current members of the travel industry though, likely leaving the regular speculator and startups out.

I would have to agree with armstrong on this one, you don't really get REAL ownership of the domain names you register with new.net.

Riceman is an unknown quantity at this point

Just seeing the buzz going on with .travel I think new.net is heading uphill on a battle they will probably lose.

I don't think that such an arrangement would be even necessary. Current .xxx registrations are probably of the ultra-premium kind, which will be snapped up anyway. If these names are somehow pre-reserved through a new.net arrangement, then it will severely dampen domainer interest in the tld.

I don't think they could be pre-reseved if ICANN has anything to do with it. But, I do think maybe the sponsor would want to notify existing new.net holders to allow them to take a shot the day it goes live.

This is a sponsored domain. That means you will have to "join" the sponsor group in order to register a name, just like .aero, .coop, and .museum. Although I'd guess that membership in this TLD sponsor may be as easy as clicking yes to a TOS agreement. It could sort of "brand" you as a member of a porn trade group though.
