Thumbs down Private Domains Can't be Transferred?? a 1&1 issue?

i decided to read the contract of my agreement with 1and1 when they provide me with private registration. it says:
Quote:
2. SERVICES PROVIDED
2.1

1&1 will acquire a Second-Level Domain Name ("Private Domain Name"), on your behalf, assuming that the Domain Name you request is available for registration. 1&1 will not own any Private Domain Name registered on your behalf under this Section. Any costs incurred by 1&1 to obtain and/or maintain the Private Domain Name on your behalf shall be charged to you by 1&1. Private Domain Names may not be transferred. The toplevel domain .us may not be registered as a Private Domain Name.
wtf? can i un-private domains i've already bought? is there a cost associated to that? or can i only change it when i renew?
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/239487-private-domains-cant-transferred-1-1-a.html
do other registars do this too? is this standard procedure?

Idk if a newbie can provide rep, but if I can, I'll be doing so for good, detailed answers.

That can't be right. I sold a domain on Sedo that (unfortunately) I regged through 1&1 with privacy. Sedo walked me through the whole deal and the buyer transferred it to Enom. You will definitely need handholding when transferring a name from them but it can be done.

That's comforting. Why do you say you "unfortunately" reg'd it with 1&1? Besides their annoying mail, I don't see a problem (yet?) with their service. I only wish they had a bulk checker.

I think what they are saying is you can't have whois privacy active and transfer a name. Basically, you can't reply to the email authorizing the transfer, since it's not your email listed. I would hope you could easily disable the privacy service.

They are very cheap, but 1) they auto-renew your names by default. You can't just check a radio button to let your name expire. You have to go through a 10 minute process for every single package. And 2) if you sell a lot of domains transferring away is an enormous effort. There is no FAQ on how to do it and in my experience they basically try to make it so frustrating that you give up. They even charge to push.

onlinebroker is an unknown quantity at this point

In order for you to transfer just deactivate your whois privacy for domain name. Wait 24 hrs and than transfer the domain name. I have done this several time and i had no problem.

Ditto. I did the same thing and sold one of my domain w/o any problems (taking off whois privacy only takes couple of hours to take)

Yes, yes, we all know 1and1 cp is clunky at best, but I actually like the auto renewal feature so that I don't have to worry about losing some of my valuable domain names. Beside, I rarely sell my domains so I will put up with clunky cp for $6 reg fee
