Talking How NOT to name your website.....

from: http://independentsources.com/2006/0...-company-urls/

Attn: Entrepeneurs
Everyone knows that if you are going to operate a business in today’s world you need a domain name. It is advisable to look at the domain name selected as other see it and not just as you think it looks. Failure to do this may result in situations such as the following (legitimate) companies who deal in everyday humdrum products and services but clearly didn’t give their domain names enough consideration:

1. A site called ‘Who Represents‘ where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… wait for it… is
www.whorepresents.com
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/218287-how-not-to-name-your-website.html

2. Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at
www.expertsexchange.com

3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at
www.penisland.net

4. Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at
www.therapistfinder.com

5. Then of course, there’s the Italian Power Generator company…
www.powergenitalia.com

6. And now, we have the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales:
www.molestationnursery.com

7. If you’re looking for computer software, there’s always
www.ipanywhere.com

8. Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church. Their website is
www.cummingfirst.com

9. Then, of course, there’s these brainless art designers, and their whacky website:
www.speedofart.com

10. Want to holiday in Lake Tahoe? Try their brochure website at
www.gotahoe.com

You've gotta love the pious breathren and their domain name... CummingFirst.com. Maybe they are a little bit more adventurous than at first glance.

Acronyms can send out dual messages as well, though, on a more subliminal level. I'm assuming that one of the reasons that these are both on 4Sale directory pages is because I am not the only one that has made this connection. (BTW, avoid the 4art one- it's one of those obnoxious Seeq sites w/ the popup-popunder-popup-popunder-exit popup etc force feeding.)

Apologies for not searching, didn't cross my mind but will do in future, thanks.
However, it has given more than one a laugh, so I'm sure no bad.

That penisland site doesn't actually sell anything, but they do have google ads. My guess is this "bad" name was intentional, so people would link to it. Actually smart in a devious kind of way, if you ask me.

No criticism intended for DomainDomain- we have all made posts that duplicate the efforts of others before us. Ironically, I was drawn to this thread as a result of link in another, more recent, post with the same material and criticism in it, as a matter of fact.

Furthermore, I don't want my little stab at humor and mild sarcasm in the wee hours of this morning to take away from Jiblob's message. There, certainly, is more than an ample amt of redundancey at the boards, although, I would disagree with a couple of Jiblob's checklist items as they are described. ie Funny names that have been previously listed on numerous other occasions such as the ones in the category of this thread topic- Yes. All funny names, per se- No.
Also, i find auction bid amts interesting, albeit, I don't need the blow by blow updates.

Most often, my own duplicate posts seem to end up being made in the Breakroom- I'll receive an email w/ what I think is a hot new joke or list that I am passsing along and the first reply that pops up informs me that it has already been posted of more often, I receive a response along the lines of, "That's a good one but I've already heard it before" or, "That one has been making the rounds for some time, now", Gee-whiz guys, give me a break! Did you ever consider that, everyone that reads the thread may no be as on top of things or as au courant as you? Plus just think of the poor guy's parade that you just rained on. Man-o-man! The Breakroom, sure can be a tough house to play to, I'll tell ya, that much.

I just ran a scan for available domain names and came across RapEmail.com... I think most of you can figure out what misfortune would hit the people who registered that..
