what if I knew a hot new product name

Lets say my friend works for apple. lets say we get drunk one night and lets say my friend tells me about a this new product his team is working on. (before of course asking me to be all quiet about it, hyshhh hyyyyshsh) Lets say he has really no idea I am in the domain business. lets say he even tells me what this new ground breaking technology will be called.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/199034-what-if-i-knew-hot-new.html

Lets say its a four letter term. (xxxx)

Now what would you do?

Should I go ahead and reg. exxxx ixxxx xxxxs xxxxz GOxxxx NetXXXX

Or some other.

Could I ever get in trouble. Could he ever get in trouble. Or should I just reg a few of the top domain word "extensions" and see how it all unfolds.

The term is pretty cool so they wouldnt be completely useless names if the groundbreaking new technology never lefts Steve Jobs office.

Clear example of cyber squatting especially if it is trademarked. If it isn't trademarked, maybe get a couple of names but develop them into something having nothing to do with the product itself.

buy one and develope into different thing. make it look like a big site, bring bunch of traffic there and wait. anyway, if it is 4 letters, definetly somebody own it right now. why not you would be that person, to whom apple will make an offer?

I dont owe him shit. And steve jobs is not my friend. (I wish) Besides The lest say was hypotetical situation. However I am in a very very remotely similar position. And no the company with the perhaps hot new device is not Apple. It was as an example.

Register all. If no TM filed and its not in use, don't see much of a problem. If they come after the names, sell them to them or let them have them if they are threatening.

There are f-Letter domains left?

If so, this shouldn't be hard to find

Seriously, if everyone is buying up any LLLL Combo, it's pure coincidence if you end up with them, yeah?

Someone will.

I don't understand how this is a clear example of cybersquatting when their is no product or trademark yet. In his what if scenario the product is still yet to be released. its in development and therefore not public knowledge. If you were to reg names before any public notice of the product you can use them as you wish and actually have a trademark claim to first use in commerce.

If you feel that your friends claims are right I would buy them all.

Insider information, just like getting insider information on stocks and the reason Martha Stewart wen't to jail for a short bit, key phrase "it's not public knowledge" meaning it was an insider leak, doesn't take much for an investigation and an employee to admit that he leaked information to a friend which proves bad faith on the buyer's end especially if using the domain for a similiar product as their intended use.

I know it is well past the fact but going back to the original theme. Regarding the question of wether it could get the mate in trouble. The simple answer to that is yes. Alot of companies make their staff sign a non disclosure contract when they get the job. Meaning that anything that any information the person gets from working for the company should be kept secret.

If it was found out that he leaked the name of the product or any information regarding it he could quite easily lose his job.

Guys. You have to understand that the scenario (of drunk friend) was made up too. Thats why I said late say and lets sat it was Mac.

BUT - I had inside track on this project through a scenario related to a friend -- I am glad I did not take advantage of the situation even though I knew that I could have quite easily gotten away with it... Thread can stay - No body including my friend did anything wrong.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=199034

About would it have been cuber squatting - regardless of the way I found out - I am still a bit unclear on that and thats why I referred to the ipod thing. I am sure that all those supporting domains and businesses around the name are only good for ipod --

so remaining unclear and next time - yeah maybe I would reg just a couple and be very quiet with them for a year or so...

well, my brother is the head guy for a major companies internet services and they owned (example; thenamepros.com) they were happy with it as the name (example;namepros.com) was taken well i ended up getting the name 2 years later (example: namepros.com) I bought it reg`d it under my business name and told my brother i was able to purchase the name, he had told me they wanted it many time in the past. So i sent an email to him as if i did not know him, he forwarded the email to his boss, and we worked a deal without anyone knowing.
It was a win/win.
You could have worked it like that.

PS; i had the name only 3 months before i contacted them.

I'm sure your hypothetical "friend" had a NDA of some sort with his employer (Microsoft, apparently; assuming that portion of the hypothetical was right - that you had a "friend" on the inside), so the major "loser" in this situation could be your "friend." I know that when I spent 5 weeks in Redmond that MSFT spent a full 2 days explaining what I couldn't tell people about what I saw in the remaining 4.X weeks
I think you did the right thing letting this one pass, even though I understand the pain in missing out on a good thing...
Can't help but think that nothing good can come from using inside info too far in advance.
