private registration?

is it worth it to pay extra for private registration, say though godaddy?

what if its provided for free?

is spam really a problem? does private registration prevent possible buyers from emailing you?

thanks for the help.

dnoa.org is including free whois protection if you become a member of it, :IMHO: actually nowadays free whois protection if it's provided for free are being abused by scammers and spammers and they register a scam web site taking scammy orders.

A private registration does prevent possible buyers from emailing you as your contact information is not made public. It will also stop domain-related spam, deter identity theft and fraud, stop harassers, stalkers and data miners, protect your identity and maintain your privacy.

a good point here by: peter phillips
if you're a domainer it would help a lot if you're not using a private registration or whois protection for you to be contacted by most people interested to buy your domains, and if yo're a domain builder better use whois or not also because your clients and prospects would want to contact you and they would shied away if you hide your whois info from them and will not treat you as existing individual and will not buy from you just in case your site offers a shop or an ecommcer site. It's not worth registering with Godaddy, let alone using their private registration. You might want to read the fine print on the contract before agreeing to hand over your domain to them—which is what you do when you use their service.

You get what you pay for. Don't expect to get any sort of iron clad “private registration” for cheap.

Only if you don't have a decent spam filter. But if you don't then yes, it's a major problem.

Only with crappy services, which I'm sorry to say 99% of the stuff out there is.

It is only really worth using for adult registrations if you want to keep your info private.
namecheap provides a good service as you are able to assign the private reg and remove it or keep the service to assign to another domain ie you get the service as a separate tool with all domains, so you can use it to top up any domain...with GD it is only assigned to the name you reg and if removed disappears as a service unless you want to pay again. also on renewal the NC private reg is much cheaper than GD.

I had used protection of GD and RF....
where RF actually filtered ALL email diverted to the protected whois address and not fowarding them to me
and GD actually forwarded some spam messages to me.

Conclusion: Don't waste money to buy them.

I am interested in private reg for a domain I do not want to sell. What kind of bad stuff is in the contract for private reg?

none.
with the NC guard it just hides your whois data with something anonymous.
also with NC reg it is not automaticaly applied. you choose whether or not to make it live post-reg.
you can also lift it at any time after reg.

Just a quick note

if you register 3 or more domains at godaddy, you get free whois protection (you need to add the whois protection manually)

Spam is a serious problem, if you have many domains.

Pisses me off sometimes.

The only kind of private registration I'm aware of that is solid both in protection of your privacy would involve you transferring legal ownership of the name to the private registration company. However when you do this you need certain legal documents to protect your rights.

In the real world this happens all the time, and there is standard language for these documents. They read nothing like the TOS documents from most registrars which effectively say they can screw everything up loose your name for you and don't owe you a cent.

If your worried about spam go get a post office box from your local post office and use a throwaway account for your contact email address which can be changed periodically.
