Caution GoDaddy's grace period???

Have I just missed this or what?

GoDaddy charges a $80 renewal fee on expired domains once the domain is 15 days past expiration.

I know this is not the case for RegFly, NameCheap or Enom.

Is this the fee to get the name out of REDEMPTION ?
It's not that expensive then as many registrars will charge $200...
Dynadot is $80 too.

Your correct about the fees, but the difference with GoDaddy is that it starts at 15 days past expiration and everyone else starts it at 30 days.(As far as I know)

equity78- It is a WWD, but the guy insists it's 15. Either way , all the others go 30 days and not 12,15,19 or whatever it is.

I can tell you this though, if I really have to pay $80 each I'll be transfering all my domains away from all my actual GoDaddy and WWD accounts the next day.

The redemption period was designed to protect against the accidental loss of domains upon expiry.
Unfortunately the original idea behind it has been largely turned into a farce by Verisign and the registrars as a way to screw more money out of you
Some registrars apparently charge $80 to restore a name out of redemption, other $200. I understand it is a manual process.
You have to understand that the profit margin on registrations is very low (a few ¢). Registrars make much more money on that kind of "services".
It's a bit like a bank. A checking account is not so lucrative for the bank, but if you have incidents on your account like overdraft, card lost etc they can levy a penalty and charge you even more. Get the idea ?

*Never* let your names expire unless you want to drop them.

- keep track of all your domains (an Excel sheet would do)
- have reminders in place and renew at least 2 months in advance
- do not rely on the courtesy reminders from your registrar
- make sure your whois is up-to-date (in particular E-mail address)

Funny thing is, I have never had a drink or "smoke" in my life. It was just an error in the process due to the changing of a few emails and a new computer.

sdsinc-

Errr... Thanks for the tips.

With somewhere around 2000 domains and 75 sites I would have never thought of this.

well godaddy is in market and they can do w.e they want

good idea to always have 2+ year of registration if you have plans to keep the domain

Just remember that registrars can opt to give a grace period or not. ICANN's
not really forcing them to provide any, and not everyone can afford it if they
especially charge lower than $6 for .com domain names.

Speaking of Go Daddy's grace period:

http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-...y+grace+period

Quote:
If Go Daddy decides to renew your expired domain name on your behalf you will have a Renewal Grace Period during which you may reimburse Go Daddy for the renewal and keep your domain name. The Renewal Grace Period is currently 12 days but subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this Agreement.
At least the redemption fee's cheaper than those of other registrars.
