Yahoo and Dmoz Listings

HI All

I have a question you, ?

If an expired domain name has a Yahoo or Dmoz listing is it worth more then if it did not,

And if it is worth more, Then how much more value does a Yahoo or Dmoz listing add to the value of the domain name,

How do you personally value a listing in Yahoo or Dmoz for expired an domain name.

Thanks for any help

Yahoo and DMOZ listings add some value, but this added value is very limited (very low $XX) because:

- I don't see a lot of traffic even from my own Yahoo directory listings.
- DMOZ listings are relatively easy to get, and are still free.
- There are a lot of expired domains with Yahoo and DMOZ listings.

Low $XX even if its in a retail category on Yahoo?

I don't get a lot of traffic from my retail directory listings. If there is a way to accurately gauge traffic from a particular Yahoo directory listing, then I could change my mind. But right now, it seems 99+% of my traffic comes from type-ins, partner sites, PPC, and yahoo and google searches. Less than 1% comes from directory listings.

Also, Yahoo now has annual listing fees for new submissions. While a site submitted under the old one-time fee setup will have more value, I don't see how one differentiate it from a listing with an annual fee.

Thats what I was refering too. It should be worth a little more because it costs a few hundred to get in there now. Of course it does not make a domain great by itself, but it can help some if its a domain you would want to develop.

I have a different perspective on this issue. There are a couple of things that might make a Yahoo! or dmoz listed domain more valuable than a similar non-Yahoo! or dmoz listed domain.

1. A business related Yahoo! listing is $299. So if you obtain a previously listed domain through expiration - you've saved $299.

2. If you have a commercial Yahoo! listing, you're sure to be picked up by Google. In fact, Google actually mentions Yahoo! directory listing and dmoz on it's website as a good first step in getting spidered by Google (I copied their language below):

What else can I do to get listed in Google?

Google partners on the Web include Yahoo! and Netscape. If you are having difficulty getting listed in the Google index, you may want to consider submitting your site to either or both of these directories. You can submit to Yahoo! by visiting http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/. You can submit your site to Netscape's Open Directory Project (DMOZ) by visiting www.dmoz.org. Once your site is included in either of these directories, Google will often index your site within six to eight weeks.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=14290

3. Yahoo! can be a POWERFUL traffic driver. Sure, if you have some obscure listing in the middle of a long list - it may not drive tons of traffic.

But a good listing can launch a whole business. Also - being listed in the correct category in Yahoo! affords you the opportunity to advertise in their 'Sponsored Listing' section (not Overture results) at the top of the directory. You can ONLY advertise in the section that your listing is in.

4. If a site is Yahoo! or dmoz listed it is more likely to have 2 other important attributes that contribute to a domain's value:

*High link popularity and,
*High Google page rank

So - A Yahoo! or dmoz listing may not be the definitive attribute to determine an expired domain's value, but it's one positive indicator.

But how can you tell what kind of listing it has? Do you just take the seller at his word?

Armstrong: I'm sure you could just go through the directory where the domain is *supposed* to be listed according to the seller and check it out for yourself. They can't fake that. If he says it's in "pet supplies" on the 1st page, you can just browse through it and look for it.

You simply type the name into the Yahoo! directory and check the directory listing. For example:

setla.com is set to drop on December 30, 2003.

Type 'setla.com' into Yahoo! with the 'directory' tab selected, and you'll see this result:
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=14290

Sony Entertainment Television in Latin America
Category: Television > Argentina
www.setla.com/

You can then hot link through to the category - in this case - Television > Argentina and see the actual listing for the domain:

SITE LISTINGS

Arte RadioTelevisivo Argentino - broadcaster and TV producer: Channel 13, Volver, and Todo Noticias.
Cablevideo S.A. - red de televisión por cable.
Sony Entertainment Television in Latin America
TVFuego S.A. - canal de cable.

As far as I know there is NO WAY to "fake" this. Hope this helps.

What I mean is - how can you tell the difference between an older, permanent Yahoo listing vs. a newer one that has an annual fee? If part of your purchasing decision is the existence of a Yahoo listing, wouldn't it suck to find out that the listing expires in a week? Then if you want to keep the listing for another year, you'll have to fork out $299.

A good indication is how long has been developed. If its fairly new, then its probably an annual fee. If its 3 years or older then its a good chance it will stay in it as long as it has a site on it in the same field.
