Talking India to have 100 million internet users by 2008!

Just found this current article. India is supposed to have 100 million internet users by 2008. They had 18+ million users in 2003, and I read about 25 million currently. This is good news for those members buying India domains!

Any comments, positive, or negative??

Well there can't be so many internet users, since US population is less than billion for sure.

It is not surprising that the indian and chinese populations are expanding dramatically. It will not take alot of time to learn english. From what I know, many chinese schools in China are already enforcing a "must" to learn english since elementary. The coming chinese generations will most likely all know how to speak english.

I recently read somewhere that in ten years time more people will speak English in the Peoples Rebublic than the Countries whose first language is English combined.

The problem with India is that although English is the chosen language of Commerce, the masses are poorly educated and speak dozens of different languages and dialect.

Education is the key to success of every developing Country.

This is true, I started to learn English as a compulsory curriculum when I was in the 4th grade of elementary school and it was 16 years ago. Now it seems they started to learn English in kindergarten.
But I think even college people are reluctant to visit English web sites. It must be a Chinese site to attract the mass of Chinese people.

But the vast majority of those who are poorly educated do not have access to a computer, let alone an internet connection.... on the other hand, the ones who are well educated, speak fluent english. In fact, there are many many christian missionary schools in india that teach you impeccable english right from the first standard.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=139498

Another point to note is that differences in local dialects and languages often force people to converse in english. A person from the northern part of India would have to actually speak in english if he went to the southern part of the country.

So when they say about a 100 million are going to get online by 2008, you can assume that at least 25-40% of those will have acceptable to excellent english language skills... and that comes to 25-40 million

go grab some .in's (IMO .co.in wont work when you have .in's available)

It's not surprising to me.. I have great respect for the Indian people and culture.. and with that population and the fact much of the tech support is outsourced to India, again, no surprise!
