How much impact will the .be landrush bring?

How much "impact" will the .be free landrush bring to the domain industry? We've seen what happened with the .info mania last year. What will happen this time around?

I don't see it being as powerful as the last one because .info is more globablly recognized compared to the .be, which is supposed to only be for Belgiums.

I know it's belgium, but I can't help but think "Belize" for some reason... Not that it matters at all to the "landrush" factor, however.

.be is a "fun", easy-to-remember extension and certainly has some fun applications ("tobeornotto.be").

One of the largest factors that could come into play is how many registrations from the "rush" to date are cancelled or are not registered. The "sorry" emails have started, and if they remove the domains that are resolving for a lot of folk, I think some backlash would be the order of the day.

That being said, .be's are apparently already receiving some traffic, and 3 letters are still available, so there does exist a good opportunity to get in on the ground floor + get some parking revenue.

In short: give it 1 week and I'll let you know

IMHO the landrush will negatively affect the value of .be names for the months to come. I can safely assume most of the names recently registered will be dropped by next year.
On the other hand I believe most of the best names were long gone.
I am thinking it would have been more clever to charge a low amount (even $1) rather than giving them away for free. I am sorry to see, some folks are spoiling the whole thing.

But think about the .info 25 free registrations promotion... seems to have worked for them!
Charging $1 would have made us all question whether or not the extension was even worth $1 for some lesser keywords, but we can all aggree they are worth at least $0

I think the premium .be's will all be taken by the time the promotion is over, so that will cause a lack of supply and raise the demand for prices a little... but the market won't take off unless there is free transfer IMO, since most names aren't worth the 20$ fee.

Im not going to be goind for free .be's. Soon .be domain names will make your website look the same as with a .tk domain name (really cheap).
Oh, and another reason im not getting them is when i tried to sign up it kept saying my ph # was incorrect or something

There sure isn't any harm in taking advantage of a freebie, but I don't believe the .BE will have any signigicant impact on the domain industry. The problem with the free .BE is that they are going to be renewing at 20 EUROS, which makes them more expensive than a regular gTLD like .COM .INFO or .NET when you look at them beyond their initial 12 month period.

A two year .com registration is ~$15, or 3 years for ~$22.
A two year .BE registration is ~$23, or 3 years for ~$46.

Domains are intended to be developed, and it isn't a great reason to develop these except for those who are soley interested in the "quick sale" side of things.

Not true...

It depends on what registrar you take. eurodns.com is not the only one giving free domains away. By example gratisbe.be charges only €8 in the future.

That's good. I saw most people were using EuroDNS, so I quoted that price. It makes better sense to register at the place with a low renewal fee. 20 EUR is not a good value.
