5-Day Grace Period on registrations

Hello Everyone,

I recently came across the ICANN 5-day grace period specifications (can be found at http://www.icann.org/tlds/agreements...10-11may01.htm)

What my question is, does this mean that we can register domain names and if they recieve no traffic in 4 days, we can cancel them on the 5th day and recieve our money back from the registration company?

The registrar would get their money back but we wouldn't. I think they play on the fact that we don't know about this.

This question was already asked a while ago. Can't remember it it was on NP or DNforum. Well, I believe most registrars won't extend the facility to registrants but keep it to themselves.
A few like DirectI are said to offer the possibility but they will keep a $1 fee.
That grace period was established to protect registrars from registration mistakes so they can recover the costs but obviously many of them are now abusing the system to test traffic on dropped names.

The 120-hour thingie is solely for registrars. Whether they'll extend it to the
registrants is within their discretion.

It's reasonable to believe registrars should give extend this to registrants. But
you've got to realize that those who charge less than $10 hardly make money
out of it.

They do have costs just like any other business. It's all a numbers game, and
they try to compensate by offering other services like web hosting.

Unfortunately it's a reality that some registrars are indeed abusing this. This is
actually talked about, but it remains to be seen what ICANN's final say.

It's unfair, yes. But whoever said life is fair?

There are some registrars that extend this priviledge to their customers. From what I know, major registrars such as Godaddy and Enom do not allow their customers to cancel domain registrations.

There is a registrar that explicitly allows you to register a domain, test traffic, and if not satisfied, cancel and get full refund. I remember it costs about $20. I even bookmarked it on my laptop but it was stolen and I cannot remember the URL, nor find it using google or searching threads (I cannot remember if I found about it here or at another domain forum).
