Given their overall size and what I've heard about them from the hosting end of things this doesn't suprise me. Personally, I'm not too keen on hosts that get into the domain business and vice versa.

Yeh, I use like a million other registrars for most of my domains, but these guys are just idiots and are trying to charge me multi-hundreds of dollars for domains I explicity said not to renew. This is the second time it's happened, which is so annoying, considering this time I followed their directions and faxed a paper in, emailed them, called them, etc.

Seriously, folks: I'd *really* recommend against using this registrar.

This is definately true. Takes a good week for them to email you back, and usually they don't correct the problem. When you call them, nobody can speak english and knows wtf you're trying to say, nor can you understand them.

Its been like that everytime i've had a problem.

What is going on with 1and1.com lately? These complaints are coming twice daily now. I think their low prices have attracted far too many customers than they can handle, to be honest. jehnidiah, welcome to the growing club of people who have experienced the worst of 1and1.

Isis: To cancel the auto-renew, you have to go to cancel.1and1.com within a month and a half before the domains are set to renew, fill out the form, print it out, and sign and fax it into their office. Then HOPEFULLY after they send you the acknowledgement they won't re-register them anyway. That's what happened this time: they said they wouldn't re-register, I followed the rules, but they did it anyway and charged my account.

Also, about pushing domains, there's not much use in doing that, because to push a domain at 1and1.com costs 5.99 (even if it's not being re-registered.. a "service fee" they said), so you'd be basically paying for it again. If you want to push anywhere, push it OUTSIDE of 1and1.com (which is also an annoying process, unless they've changed over the past year).

That's why I was one of the few happy to see them offer the free hosting for a year scheme back when they expanded into the American market. They've bit off more than they can chew in this case, I believe.

I am at this moment moving all my domains out of 1and1. Benn using their UK servies for about 3 years now, and the support and help I get is rubbish.

Even when I have moved names from them over to my Godaddy account, I still get billed. I even go and cancel the names before moving them and I still get billed for names that are no longer with them. And the amount of BS I have to go through to get refunded is a joke.

AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS !!! - They are just not worth the hassle.

Alex

if you log into your 1+1 account and the names are still listing then the buggers will bill you.
you need to have the domain name removed from your user area.
NPers are warned that the whole process takes a long long time and should not wait to near name expiry to begin the process of cancellation or transfer without incurring additional 1+1 fees.

Just wondering, what kind of domain company renews domains for customers and then charges them after?? If the customer doesn't pay, it should be implied he/she doesn't want to renew it, especially if you sent them emails regarding it... seems their policy is to be oblivious to the customer's cancellation and instead renew then charge after, as if the customer really wanted the domain!

Don't really get why they're doing that?

Has to be a deliberate ploy IMO... frustrate the customer hoping he'll give up and pay...

Are they just making it up that they renewed it when they didn't? Let's say the customer does win a legal battle, they'll end up with hefty bills.

Besides, isn't there a BBB (Better Business Bureau) organization where you can dispute flawed company policies in UK or US? Maybe you guys should try there and see what action can be taken.

Well it's not gonna work with me (thinking I'll get frustrated and just pay).

Also, as for the BBB, that company has no power to do anything. It's only a resource for people. They can ask and say things to companies, but they're not a government entity, so can't really do a whole lot.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=133163

I'll just issue chargebacks to my credit card that they've charged, and go from there. They told me on the phone that if I issue a chargeback, they'll refer me to a collection agency, and "get the money one way or the other, you choose." Of course, I'm not gonna pay the collection agency, either, and they don't have enough real information on me to put this on my credit score, I don't believe. And if they do, a lawsuit will ensue, I promise you that.

it's borderline fraudulent....

a registrar has NO right renewing a domain for you, it's the owner's responsibility to renew a domain PERIOD!

I forsee many complaints lodged against 1and1 in the months/weeks to come.

this is also not fair to those that want to pick up a name that the owner decides to let drop. imagine waiting for a name to drop, only to find that the registrar is forcing the owner to keep the name

The domains auto-renew by default and there's no toggle to shut it off.. that in itself seems highly suspicious to me.

As for complaints, people have been complaining about them forever.. which is one reason I let my card on file with them lapse.

Better Business Bureau does no good.. it's a clearing house for complaints but they take no action, just list complaints.
