ICANN approves delegation of .eu TLD

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After months of contractual negotiations, the ICANN board finally approved
the delegation of the new .eu top level domain on March 21, 2005 and
authorised their CEO, to enter into an agreement with EURid, the
offical .eu registry. The board decision sets in motion the next stage
whereby IANA (The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), puts .eu in the
internet root. This is not expected to take more than 10 days.
In order to be able to launch .eu at the end of this year, EURid is
currently working on the full .eu Registration Policy including the
rules and procedures for the so called sunrise period which
will
allow public bodies and holders of prior rights such as trademarks to
register in advance of others.
The next step will be the accreditation of a network of .eu
Registrars who will register .eu names on behalf of end-users. A list
of accredited Registrars will be published on the EURid web site
(Mai/June 2005).
Provided the .eu registration policy receives EC approval in time,
the .eu sunrise period should be launched before the end of this year.
The sunrise period will last for four months after which general
registration will begin on a first-come-first-served basis.
More information about EURid and .eu can be found at: www.eurid.org
well, if you register a domain with a european address even though you don't live in europe then that is not allowed. You would be putting your name in jepordy.
what does .eu stand for?
Europen Union or Europe?
I live in Romania and we are not EU members yet, so I will have to wait until 2007 to reg myself a domain?
and btw what registrar do you trust for .eu?
Or later, depending on when you're ready to enter the EU. But yes, correct. Only EU domeniciled entities may register a domain with Eurid.
None have yet been accredited. However quite sure DD24 is the one to recommend.
