Nice link.

The thing I want to know, and would like to find some credible and thorough resource on - is exactly how common English is spoken/written in India. I know it's fairly common, but I really want more details.

Also, what about print, billboard and other types of advertisements.

Amongst the upper classes in particular, I suspect english is widely spoken as a second language (having been under British rule for many years).. in the lower classes, I'd imagine it's at least taught in school.. I would think there are several here tho that can actually answer that question with some authority.

Thanks for pointing out the article...Biggest thing about today's India and about 20 years ago is the OPTIMISM among the youngsters...

In the cities you will easily get by with English... and there are many....
English is so rooted in India education system that it is accessible even in some of the remote villages...

Gregoire is on a distinguished road

Hi all,

Dgridley : Thx for the link, very interesting.

I have invested some money on .in and .co.in English keywords

Why ? I know India a little bit since I have been there 5 times (that's approx. 4 months in India alltogether) and I'm convinced people who use/will use internet do speak English.

Moreover, Indians do not only live in India ... and I'm nearly sure that these Indians speak English too.

Concerning .co.in, I have a "proof" that it is already known/used by Indian websurfers : I have some type-ins (Not much but one of them receives approx. 15 visits a day) on some of my names.

Grιgoire.

Here's something else I found:

"Ten years ago, the United States was the country with the largest English-speaking population. Today, India has taken over that status. With roughly a third of its population – or more than 300 million – possessing English language capability, India has more people speaking the language than the US and UK combined. Indian English, however, is not entirely the same as British or American English, as it has been influenced by indigenous linguistics through the years. In addition, contemporary Indian pop culture – most notably movies – adds even more new elements to the Indian English language. At the same time, notes the author, local tribal languages are being preserved with care; for example, many companies nowadays offer different language options for customers. In that sense, India has a lot to teach the world. – YaleGlobal"

India also has a 59.5% literacy rate.
Average income is approx $2,900...that's not a lot of disposable income.
25 % of the population lives below the poverty line.
60% of the population works in agriculture.
Personally not too sure where the .in buyers will be coming from.
