how to bring people into new classifieds web site ?

i just move into brand new small city, which just sarted to be developed. I bought a domain name , which is that "city name"classifieds.com", i put classifieds software on it, and now i have no idea what to do. can somebody share some experience please about how to bring local people into that site, and how to make them post there things to buy or to sell, or to advertise? I know , i would not post anything in a empty web site. Any tricks you could suggest for me?

out of this many professional domainers, there is nobody, who knows how to bring local public into web site??????

Well it depends on how many locals are interested.

If the city has population of 500,000 and only 10,000 of them know how to operate a computer. Out of them only 1000 goes on internet and out of them only 100 might want to put classifieds on some site. So they will search for site in Search engines or might also type in your name as it is already associated with that particular city.

50 out of that 100 will not fill in the form. And this things will continue.

To get the local market you will need to advertise it locally rather then internet.

You can put small posters here and there where more people are visiting. Best places can be some restaurants, theatres etc. etc.

Also target your audience. Bcoz you don't want to put the ads in some KG school. (Only 10 or 12 teachers might understand what it is

)

Buy a mailing list that can be sent out locally. Get a t shirt made with your web address on it and wear it everyday. Offer a reward for every 500th listing.

You could put up flyers, especially in shop windows etc. Poster campaigns, get ads in the local newspaper, i like the t-shirt idea but i don't think it'd bring many people in. Just think how you would advertise to sell something locally and advertise it that way I guess is what i'm saying

Start posting existing businesses or things that people already sell to make it look like its busy. People will find themselves there through word of mouth or through search engine and it should start to pick up eventually.

i was thinking about it. I found lots of adds at craiglist. And i wanted to put that same ads on my site.... But, is that legal?
