With the number of good members here at Namepros I think together and make a good business. My idea is to have a Yahoo type business but better. I think a search engine, hosting, domain registration, news, some sort of messenger, emails, tips and tutorials and more!
What I want to do is have more ideas and those who are willing to help!
I think the idea is good in concept, but going to be unpractical in reality. The first issue is $$$. You are going to need thousands of dollars a month just to cover server costs, let alone advertising, and cost to develop all these things.
Yes, to tell you the truth - it needs a super huge investment, just for hosting
Otherwise, focusing on one target may be better -- like a search engine.
possibly start an email company and a search engine, then link them together, then add a smaller version of something like dmoz, contact someone that runs something similar see if they would be interest in some sort of co op then work on a messenger etc
i would be interested in hleping if it goes ahead, not financially as im a tight ass
but i wouldnt mind helpng in a big project although my time is limited
Like the other said, it would be a ton of money. You would have to spend most of it on promoting the site just so you can make some profit. I've always wanted to start a search engine though
The search engine is going to be the hardest part...If you really want to make something big, you are going to have to create a formula for search rankings, buy hundreds of servers to store all the data, and spend thousands and thousands of dollars a month on hosting alone. Good luck!
Nope, e-mail service would be cheaper...in any case, but why? People can get a free email up to gigabyte with maximum security. Even with a search engine, it is not going to beat some big guys like Google, MSN, is it? I don't mean to tell you that this stuff isn't possible, but maybe If you think deeply in this, you can find some or a few unique ideas, something that users will need and use.
If you drop the Search, eMail, idea..and drop the entire idea of portal-like. You could think of something like ICANN registrar, I like the idea, its not easy though, you need a lot of hands, developers, designers, partners, and on top of this -- a good capital. The return would be good, very good. That's different to search engines, because the domain market is already competitive, we don't buy domains from one registrar, so another registrar won't hurt the industry, it would be a good benefit ~ unlike search engines, the top search engines already known, and they are popular enough..MSN, Google, etc..but look at domain registrars, there is not a leader, so why not yours could be one of the leading registrars.
So what I'm saying ~ try to avoid the idea of portal-like sites. And you may disagree with me.
Ya, thats what I was trying to say before. Starting any business is going to be hard, but nothing is impossible. Why don't you explain your ideas a little further? Do you wish to make a profit, just expand the NamePros network, or what?
Well I havn't got money to put in to this.
The thing is with expaning the NP network is that we will have NO control over it as the network is owner by Ron however I do want to start some really good site.
We could make a huge partnership maybe, something that is shared between all namepros members (ofcourse these who will cooperate), why not? lets see how many members are willing to invest into this, that depends on how many active members here. Say if we have 18,215 members as of this moment, if everyone paid a little $10 it would be $180,000.00+ , while some people can pay $20, others $50, etc. We can really make a shared capital, each with his own little share, this way we can start something.
But all of this, just calculations, nothing approved yet ~ and no project specified yet ~ I like the idea of ICANN registrar, but we need to move this to the admin / staff first..also I need to mention that not all 18,000+ will cooperate in this.
But you know ~ this needs to turn into a serious project somehow.
Very little of the members are active so I think we only have about 5,000 active members. And of those who have the money only a few would take part.
Possibly 1,000 in total.
The thing is what could I do to start a site like this up.
I mean I have loads of spare time and nothing to do with it.
So far :
A search engine is out of the question....
A free email addy is pointless.....
Hosting is already a very big market and would be pointless to start at it now.....
Messenger would be VERY hard to do........
Domain registration would cost ALOT of money.........
News would also be very hard to do.......
The main issue would be $$$'s. Id be willing to make a BIG contribute for a share in NP, but theres alot of people that wouldnt.
If we all put the $$$$'s in and in return got a share of the company i think it could work, with the right people involved and some proffesional people ( lawyers ect. ) i think it can be done. Its not up to me though.
