Running a server

I'm hoping to run my own server just to get some learning experience. Problems -

First how do I install apache, PHP, perl and all that other good stuff. Read in another topic that XXAMP will do the trick.

Second - What do I do after that? I have the website built, but where do I upload it?

Third - Can the rest of my computer be hacked at? What if I only use one harddrive for my data?

What is my badnwidth limitation?

Am I an idiot and should I just return to paying others for hosting?

System specs - Running Windows XP Pro, may consider running linux, but starting out on XP Pro. 2.0 GHZ with plenty of memory and hard disk space. Fast connection of downstream 40MBPS - 50MBPS average, 80 MBPS at peak, and upstream of probably something fast too but what the number is beats the heck outta me. I'm on a static IP and I hear that that is good for my domain name?

Lemme know what other info you may need.

Thanks in advance as I've been trying to do this project for years but end up getting stuck after installing apache halfway manually (not XXAMP)
