tonecas,

Just wanted to say...

1) I understand your frustration as to the lack of "real" promotion (i.e. outside the DN industry) that seems to take place for these "major" domain auctions. To me it seems that there are rarely many endusers in the mix.

I also believe this may be one of two reasons many decent names go for so little -- along with the promoters, aka "quality judges", always pressing for low, low, LOW reserves on one's dn's -- and why many are left on the table.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=730737

Here's how the conversation plays out in my head...
Quote:
"Hey Joe*, we're doing another auction. Send out the dn list to the usual suspects and let's see if anyone bites... And no, don't bother doing any leg work to actually get any endusers in to the fray. If we do that we won't be able to cherry pick the ones we want and then flip them to the endusers ourselves."
*(no one in particular, just a generic "Joe" used as an example)

2) If anyone involved in the organization of an auction actually bids/buys in their auction, it strikes me as a bit of a conflict.

Just my opinions, I'm pretty cynical to begin with anyway.

Now with that said...

I am NOT a fan of Rick what so ever, but if I'm interpreting your post to his blog correctly, I think you may have read (misread???) a little too much in to what he was saying about the sale of your dn.

What I got from his post was that someone else had made a negative/disparaging comment(s) specifically about your DN and Rick was explaining why the person was wrong and that your dn was a very nice domain with possible future potential that was purchased at a reasonable price.

All pretty positive if you ask me... But you didn't so, oh well, there ya go!

testcase, probably my bad as I should put a note for people to ignore the scope of the post and focus more on the TRAFFIC's auction issues part of my reply.

I understand that the post is positive towards the domain but nonetheless raises several important issues.

* TRAFFIC adds 0 value to a domainer, so unless you have super-premium domain names I think that they are a waste of time and money (on the table). in fact, IMHO major industry auctions add 0 value to most of domainers without super premimum domains, and this is what my experience tells from my own participation in several of such premium events and what I see from other domainers entering in these auctions.

* it is particularly surprising and sad to see that one of the most well spoken domain events is so poorly managed. I mean, you submit a list of domains, you get one or more listed on the event and you do not receive even a simple email saying that you had a domain accepted or that you had sold a domain? only when the domain is sold and paid you receive an out of the blue email asking to transfer the domain?? WTF? if I worked that professionally in my day do day business activities I would be ruined!

* when making this reference post Rick could not find a better example to talk about than this DN sale. it seems that he cannot grasp that it is at least morally unacceptable/dubious to have a partner bid on a domain that he is brokering in the first place. a domain sale that he had not put any effort on it to sell. it is not difficult to anyone to connect the dots and see that this is all very lame to say the least. if you don't want to look bad, don't act bad. this is supposedly a post to posterity but it seems more like a sales pitch.

bottom line: stay away from TRAFFIC
