Yahoo is a true generic word. If one were to operate a Yahoo* domain, yet stay away from the search engine business, it may be possible to fight a C&D.

True, but Yahoo is in the business of do many things now.. domains, hosting, dating, auctions, games, music, magazine publishing, etc. It might be hard to do anything online without them coming down on it.
