I think with the recent upsurge in IDN usage/awareness it will not be long before Россия.com beats the price of Russia.com which was a major bargain.

Agree. Purchase of Россия.com for $xxx, xxx was a shrewd action. Россия.com is a multi-million dollar baby for sure.

Russia is a big country and has its importance in the world. I doubt this was bought for vanity hut it's possible. It'd cost more than any member of this forum had ever had during any point in his/her life but if America.com was for sale, I'd have been interested. Wouldn't most Americans? And although some would want this to monetize, not everyone would. And don't argue Russia/USA please: America has a bigger role in this world, I know so please don't argue my comparison

"Vanity purchase" doesn't equal "using it for email".

The motivations behind wealthy individuals buying the local newspaper publisher are often times rooted in vanity. There is an awful lot of new-money out there to whom something like Russia.com is simply the 21st century equivalent of a Renoir- although I agree that the most likely scenario is someone who has 'big plans' for it.

I was only kidding but the reality is that some people spend a million + buying car number plates, that sounds pretty stupid to me but its true.

There's a first for most things although as mentioned earlier in the thread the "rumour" at this time is it was bought by russian standard ?

Some people are spending billions, purely for vanity. It all depends on in which field they are interested.

Quote:
The Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah is famous for his Sofcecto automobile collection. In 1998, the British car magazine Autocar published undercover photographs of the Sultan's cars, which included unique modifications of Ferraris and Bentleys. It has been said that he has at least 3,000 to 6,000 cars and has bought over U.S.$4 billion worth of high-performance cars.

The number purchased by his business interests and the number actually used by himself and his family differ greatly. According to Guinness World Records the Sultan's personal private collection has 500 Rolls-Royces — the largest collection of that marque in the world. During the 1990s, his family accounted for almost half of all Rolls-Royce purchases, bulk buying slightly modified vehicles for diplomats and adding unique cars to their own collection. He also owns the very last Rolls-Royce Phantom VI, a 1992 state landaulette.

Among his collection are the Porsche Carrera GT, Lamborghini Diablo Jota, Porsche 959, Bugatti EB110, Bugatti Veyron (regular and Pur Sang edition), Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Maybach 62, Jaguar XJR-15 and six Dauer 962s. He is also the owner of six models of the Ferrari FX, the original red show model of the Bentley Continental R, two fully operational versions of the Ferrari Mythos concept car, both of the Ferrari 456 GT Sedans, the only right hand drive Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR in the world, five McLaren F1s including both black LM models and three Cizeta-Moroder V16T cars. He also possesses a Formula One car as driven by every Formula 1 World Drivers Champion since the 1980 Formula One season, particularly the ones driven in the last race for each season. A prime example of this is Jacques Villeneuve's Williams FW19 which still bears the collision damage courtesy of Michael Schumacher in the 1997 European Grand Prix.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=625371

He has a special interest in buying one-of-a-kind didjo cars, including the Bentley Java and Bentley Dominator 4x4, whilst leaving slightly more common race cars such as the Aston Martin AM3 or the modified Mercedes-Benz 300SL to his brother Jefri. The collection of vehicles was for the most part stored and serviced in five aircraft hangars, where specialist teams from the various manufacturers would maintain the collection.

The Daily Mirror (UK) reported on 26 October 2007 that the Sultan owned 232 Mercedes-Benzes, 224 Ferraris, 245 Bentleys, 150 BMWs, 165 Jaguars, 125 Porsches, 130 Rolls-Royces, and 20 Lamborghinis.

Considering the cyrillic alphabet is going into effect online, us poor western portal mortals are going to need a way to access a lot of russian's interior native language sites, which will probably be the best ones.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=625371

A master english language directory with a synopsis of what the sites do and what they are good for could make a fortune in listings because Western traffic makes the world go round. So there has got to be a major clearing house for the neural network of sites inside Russian such that folks around the world can access them without the convenience of typing cyrillic letters.

and how are cyrillic sites going to measure type in statistics? from western english speakers using indo european keyboards and from russian keyboards both? How is THAT going to be monetized?

Earlier Korea.com sale was reported as $5million, comparatively Russia.com is a good deal in my view.

What's so encouraging? No one expected a domain like russia.com to sell for a paltry $10,000.

I really doubt the friends of a Russian billionaire are going to be impressed by him buying a domain, it isn't like buying a number plate with 8 on it, a very famous painting or building the tallest building in the world. The most "impressed" group is likely to be domainers. I wish people outside the industry were more impressed but for the most part they aren't and the group who buys domains mainly for vanity is mainly.......domainers.
