jmcc - No doubt. I think perhaps that Wikipedia is so extraordinarily popular that it could be properly monetized and taken to a truly professional level. It seems to have surpassed all other "real" encyclopedias in public awareness & use, but obviously not in accuracy or integrity. In its current state, I foresee some type major change coming sooner or later.

It could be but Carlton, but it would lose its funding relatively quickly. Wikipedia is apparently a non-profit organisation. There seems to be a fall off in editing activity in the last few years according to one article I read. (Basically someone analysed the stats for new articles and edits over the last few years and provided some interesting graphs.) The people who contribute to Wikipedia may not do so if it is a for-profit organisation.
