dmoz sucks

It has been months and one of my sites is still in queue for review. DMOZ is dead, my friends. It isn't what it used to be, when you waited a couple of weeks and if you followed the rules and had good content you got listed. Now it is all bureaucracy and knowing the right people. I guess it doesn't help that half of the categories have no editors listed. I used to worship DMOZ, now I prefer smaller directories with owners not too big for their britches.

It takes minimum 6 months to approve, submit the url and forget about it for a wile, check 6-7 months later.
As an example I submited my domain portfolio site: mdnx.com to DMOZ and 6 months later it was added to the list.

Got that right. I have one site I waited 2 years for approval. Unfortunately after year one, I had already sold it.

The idea is to describe the site. Nothing else. You also need to realize how active an editor is as well. Volunteer editors are only required to login once every few months and perform an action to keep their accounts active. Some editors may only login and review 10 sites a day, some may login and review a couple hundred a day. There are awards and incentives for being very active and helpful, but they are only there for those who wish to compete for them.

As for dezinerite, I don't doubt there may be some editors performing some type of abuse such as taking bribes. But those editors are breaking rules since this is against ODP guidelines. If you run into a "cranky" editor abusing the policies, you are more than welcome to report them. All reports of abuse are investigated and the editor will be taken care of accordingly.

So to summarize, suggesting a site is no gaurantee of review or approval. Suggesting a site is simply just that. A suggestion. So the best way to look at this is to suggest your site and forget about it for a while. If you are listed, great. If not, don't stress over it. The directory is created by humans for humans. There is no way a human can possibly list every site on the internet like some of the automated search engines possibly can.

Good point. At least now its clear to everybody. Good content is really the key in SEO.

It was accepted, it just took 2 years...like I said, I had sold it after a year and a year later it was accepted, and the new owner had made no changes except the usual updates. I understand the "suggest" part, but the greatest human edited directory, you'd think would have more priority on quality links since the site would be worthless without those links. Perhaps they are just under-manned.

You have to follow the guideline 100%, however is not easy and fast to get listed there. It took me more than 1 year to get listed on DMOZ. So people took even longer, some say they witing for their grand children to see it.
