If you have a high-paying premium keyword, you could make some good income. However, I can't see medoicre names faring too well, unless it's a niche name and you already have a presence on that name.

If your premium .tel ranks high, your actual websites could have so-so domain names and still do well. But HOW .tel ranks is still unknown.

My names still show pending (on Dotster) and all show as taken, but I don't know WHO has them.

The telnic registry now seems to be down; I checked at Dynadot, Dotster, and Webnames, so it's not likely anyone will know anything anytime soon.

geez, some of you are a pessimistic bunch of domainers! This is supposed to be a thread on what names people acquired, not another bashing about it failing before it begins! How the hell do you know people will lose money with premium .tel domains or whetehr it will take off in a big way or not. I think it's a bit early to say don't you. This is a domain like any other..it's not meant to be a website like all the other tlds. What I do know is that sunrise and landrush registrations have come in thick and fast so that has to mean something, as to whether it will be massively adopted yet, who really knows! What I do know is that the internet is changing in ways we are yet to appreciate or understand...you may be looking up dot tels like people text on cellphones (who woulda thought that would take off? Most of the cell providers didnt). I think the premium names will be worth quite a lot to some people out there soon...and please stop comparing this thing to dot mobey (how is it similar in format? and how many times must you be told that this is a very different animal to mobey)..you'd have to be ignorant to compare this to dot mobey at all I think. Im happy to have a punt on this as are many others- you gotta be in to win.

No bashing here. I always welcome a new extension. I think .tel is a nifty idea. Sure it could be done with a .com, but you don't have to worry about virus', spam and popups with .tel. The information you want is there, straight forward.

Remember there will always be a negative comment because they're afraid of the new-comer threatening their own investments.

I'm not calling anyone out, I just see it happen with other extensions.

Right!

By the way, in order to clarify that monetization IS allowed with .tel, but with some limits, read Telnic's Landrush newsletter:
http://www.telnic.com/newsletters/landrush/

Obviously they will need to clarify a little bit what can be done and what is not allowed.

Don't forget that .tel will evolve too: for instance, applications for .tel are already under development. We should think here in a new way, not just replicate what has been done with other TLDs...

No. I don't think that's what it is saying at all. If you have hotels.tel, you can sell links to hotels using the hotels.tel site.

However if you registered Jones.tel, you would not be allowed to sell links for David.Jones.tel, or John.Jones.tel, or Sheila.Jones.tel....etc...

This is how I read it anyways...... Hope I'm right, 'cause my purpose for registering in landrush was strictly to build a directory under one name for many different purposes...

Even the .tel demo of Hotel.tel allows you to view several different hotels in different city's in different countries and has links to different websites for each one.

Check this out....

From their newsletter....

What are the key benefits for businesses?

Integration of all means of communication in a single place under their brand
An entry into the next-generation yellowpages with instant worldwide exposure
A very efficient and cost effective mobile presence
Increased search engine discoverability
all without the need to build, host or manage a website.

Reference Companies under Generic Names

A business can use the .tel to reference industry specific services. For example: Hotels.tel, Plumbers.tel, Insurance.tel, Locksmiths.tel, etc. Each .tel domain could easily have multiple sub-domains for navigation to local providers or specialists.

Yes, exactly!

I'm old enough to remember people pooh poohing .com (or anything related to the web).

Ah, the late 80's!

I recall clearly the main question: "How will anyone EVER make money online?"

I think his interpretation is wrong. What it means is that you can't sell or lease canonical domains. For example, I couldn't sell hilton.hotels.tel to Hilton - but there's nothing to prohibit me from coming to an agreement with them for advertising within a more generic space like nyc.hotels.tel.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=561820

That's my understanding of an admittedly poorly written clause anyway. Hopefully the Telnic guys will clear some of these questions up. They already wrote a blog post about how .tel can be monetised..

I agree! See my previous post.

One thing I am trying to figure out right now is if there is a size limit?? Can't find info on this anywhere.... Is there a maximum # of entries per .tel site??
