It depends a little on your industry and target visitors, but, if i would need 100 backlinks, i would go:
- 1 press release (on 2 different press releases websites)
- 5 social bookmarks
- 20 forum/blog posting
- 20 article postings
- 54 directories!

And of course, not all press releases sites, forums, articles and directories are good! So search and select the best ones!

search on google you'll find lot of article directories ... but best are ezine article helium and go article.com you have to check them they are free and very effective For generating back links and traffic for your site

I think that the better way for you to obtain your 100 backlinks is to consult a professional SEO firm, but that is not free!

Well the number of backlinks which you have mentioned is easy to achieve. For this purpose you can submit your site to free link directories, you can do social bookmarks, blog comments, forum posting etc. Well, the idea of link exchange with someone is, in my opinion, not good at all as you've to be very careful during this process because you can actually get banned by search engines if you've done a link exchange with a site that do not have a very good search engine reputation. So, it will take a lot of time to research if the site's good enough for a link exchange or not.
