Directories help to create backlinks, other simple ways to get backlinks to your site would be blog comments, and getting other sites and blogs to link to your site (you can contact them directly).

I think directory submission do not help much these days. I have done directory submission for one of my sites, one year ago. I submitted to more than 1000 directories. But in Google Webmaster tools, I only see 10 or so backlinks coming from those directories.
So now, I only submit to high PR directories only.
Interesting point, thanks for that info angilina

Say NO to directory submissions. According to the latest google update they have removed directory submissions from their guide lines. So the links from them will hold no good or link juice. So stop wasting your time and money into directory submissions

Do

1.social bookmarking
2.article submissions
3.Adding unique contents to your site

Maybe that's a good thing, too many passengers on that gravytrain. Who's gonna tell them the train derailed?

Mybloglog is one of bookmarking service. I love it so much. It gives backlinks to us. Technorati also recommended. It's PR8.

One thing to avoid in social bookmarking is the redirect listings, redirect don't pass link juice.

The main thing that you should consider before doing a link building is that, your OnPage factors should be fine.

Hi,
I do Directory submission and i won't be aware of social bookmarking. Please tell me how we do social bookmarking and what's the benefit to do it.

Thanks

Bookmarks seem to give you a quick jump in traffic, but I haven't seen it last very long. We are trying it on some new sites.

Directories can work quite well, but it's not quick. And you may think why am I bothering to submit to some small directory? Well, if everyone feels that way then they won't last because no one will submit and no one will visit them. But if we support them with good listings, then they may last and could someday get bigger and send us more traffic. This is why we submit, even to those small PR0 sites.

But if you submit to 500 or 1,000 directories, you can't expect to see the results right away. And you REALLY need to make sure that both your site AND your submission is done correctly and follows the posted rules of the directory. Follow the rules that are posted on DMOZ.org when you create your listing and it should be accepted if everything else is ok. DON'T make a title that is just keywords if the instructions say to put your site name. Check the other listings if you are not sure.

Make sure your site is acceptable to the directory you are submitting to. Just because your site is not getting listed doesn't mean directories suck. It might mean your site sucks...! :-)
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=514902

We have a directory and reject almost all submissions (about 95%). A lot get deleted just because they don't put the site or company name in the title. As a directory owner, I can tell you that we don't have time to fix all of your submissions because of:

- Not following the rules. Read them or you may be wasting your time.

- Bad English or non-English submissions. We can't read other languages, so how can we review your submission???

- Keyword stuffing. Write a good description and use many keywords, but write a good description!

- Submission information cut off or words misspelled. CHECK your listing. If you paste in your information, make sure the field was long enough to take it all. If something didn't fit, FIX it!

- Affiliate or short URL links. I don't think any respectible, human-edited directory is going to let you submit affiliate links, or short URLs. It's advertising, spam, and those kind of links don't last. The go bad in weeks or months, and then you have a directory full of links that don't work anymore. If we took paid listings, we might take them.

We don't charge for listings, because we expect them to be good content and help our site. That is a fair trade in my mind and a good deal for both of us.

Free directories are your best friend. Give them your best submission and they will appreciate it an give you a link. And if you really want the link, it doesn't hurt to add a little "Thank you!" when you submit.

If you don't get any backlinks, it could be because there was something wrong in the way you submitted, or your site is not very good.

i prefer directory submission for getting backlinks from them and Social bookmarking sites to get good traffic.

Digg used to b dofollow but now its nofollow. but anyways Social bookmarking sites are better for getting huge traffic if used properly.

Social bookmarking is effective way and Directory submission is also good way but it cans make or break your site's ranking. Few tips to avoid mistakes and make the most out of directory link building.
1. Choose the best directories.
2. Watch your competition.
3. Look for topical niche directories related to your market
4. If you are targeting any kind of regional / local market, use as many local / regional directories as you can find.
5. Do not use the same anchor texts in all your directory links
