· #1 | | NamePros Member | Self hosting - good or bad idea for low traffic? I'm developing two websites offline right now. When they are completed, I'll need a host. Since I will not get many visitors early on, would it be a good idea to take an old computer I have laying around and turn it into a web server. I can wipe the drive, fresh install Windows, install Apache, and install this backup software which I can schedule to backup every night. Everything I have also runs on an APC backup, so short power outages (under 30 mins) would not be a problem. I could pretty much set it and forget it.
I'm aware that it would be much, with slower upload speeds, a slower 7200RPM hard drive... but I wouldn't this wouldn't be a problem for domains not receiving very much traffic?

| Well, first you better check things out with your ISP.
Low traffic or not, it may be against their TOS. |

| 1- isp terms of service
2 - security - you'll probably be taken out more often than it's worth.
Spend the five or six dollars a month for shared hosting and save yourself time, effort and headaches. |

| like what they have said, isp plays a vital role in making decision if they want you taking advantage of them or not, better contact your isp or call them and explain them specifically what you want accomplished, chances are if you're not on a high speed isp or most of the time they disagree. |

| As mentioned, almost all consumer ISP TOS preclude running a server, and besides, if you're serious in any way about your product, you won't go for $5-10 a month hosting, much less home hosting it on an old box.
Keep in mind that, besides your ISP TOS, you'll have to manage patching all apps and services on your box - from firmware to Apache modules to Apache itself, PHP and ... the list goes on.
Spring for professional hosting.

| Really, it's just easier and safer just to find a cheap shared host.

· #8 | | NamePros Member | Thanks for the replies. I guess I will be searching for a cheap host soon. I looked up my ISP TOS, and Port 80 (or other port web hosting) is allowed only if I upgraded my internet package, for an extra $10 a month. It's not just for web hosting, but faster speed as well. I'll pass. Rep given to all. |

| Good choice, you'll find what you need for less than it would cost to upgrade even.
(I didn't even have to come back to my second reply that someone already covered - security.) |

· #10 | | NamePros Regular | Some of the major problems you will have to worry about is:
-Security
-Uptime
-Downtime (how fast you can fix it)
-Space
Since it is a old computer, your site might run as old as that computer is (depending on what you will be running on the site). Check with your ISP also to make sure you wont get you service canceled out of nowhere. |
