it would be ideal to have unique articles submitted to article directories. however, if you submit to lot of directories, its hard to get all those unique articles. google has duplicate content penalty which you dont want to get. best way to get around this is to make a game plan. decide how many article directories you are gonna submit to. for example, if you submit to 50 directories, then i would suggest to get atleast 5 unique articles and then spin them using an article spinner to make them look like unique. you will be able to avoid the dup penalty this way
I think that replacing paras might help you ars well. I think that it must be unique for the SE not for the Readers. In other case that might be extraexpensive solution

That is a good question, ive been wondering the same myself. If someone could penalize a whole website by duplicating content, big websites like digg.com would be in trouble.
Im guessing if its duplicate content, only the content itself is disregarding and the rest of the page is still good
site that has dup content usually gets penalized. but if you submit same article to ton of directories, google wil see that your link is from same content but form many different sources. your URL will not get penalized but google stops counting the backlinks and giving you credit for all the submissions after a while. therefore if you submit the same article to 50 or 100 directories, its pretty much useless because you will not get 50 or 100 backlinks
One fairly obvious approach that you could take to avoid duplicate content is to rewrite your article for each article directory so that each directory gets its own unique version of it, but time consuming.
