I am debating weather or not to offer free shot glasses (with my logo) to viewers of my site. I know many sites have done so before, but i am trying to connect with a visitor on a level that does not consist of the internet.
Surely this will cost a signifigant $500+ .for about 1000 glasses.
Does anyone see any potential in such a promotion. Will it establish a returning visitor?

locally via newspaper ads you can promote this also you need a physical place for them to walk-in and buy it, more venues for them to pick it up and pay you the better for them.
I used to work with a promo company and glasses will be expensive to make and ship. Having your web URL laying around a bar is a good idea, but you might look into something easier to mail, say coasters or even condoms! You can brand those and they sure catch a person's eye.
I like DDC's coaster idea, as I think that is something that would be much cheaper, less breakable, and easier to give out. T-shirts like web said are also fun and easy (bit pricey) depending on where you get them from though.
In Ray's case, his site that he is promoting is a free drink recipe website, and therefore things like coasters and shot glasses would be more beneficial, and cheaper. Although for something like a web design business and such, flash drives would be very beneficial.
I never thought about napkins, that would be a good one. Ray, the best way of doing it, would be to order a bunch or coasters, or napkins, or something that a bar or restaurant could use. Go to the restaurant or bar, and say that you will give them these supplies free of charge, as long as they use them in the place. I think you will see some traffic, but only if you are able to target several (more than 10) restaurants and bars.
I forgot to mention match books, you can get them for around 4-6 cents each, custom printed with your website. The likelihood that a customer takes matches home from a bar is MUCH higher than someone taking napkins, shot glasses, and coasters home.
