Ways to check natural traffic before buying

Do you guys know of any ways to check natural traffic before buying an unregistered domain name?

I figure that using google adwords tools are helpful b/c they will show you how often certain keywords are searched for. That may be a good sign of how much traffic a domain name composed of those keywords may be getting.

I've tried traffic testing domains on godaddy...b/c they have a 5 day return policy but they will not refund you if they know you are domain testing.

Any ideas?

I sure wouldn't rely on the Google AdWords tool; it's nowhere near accurate. It's good for finding similar keywords and negative keywords, but not for measuring traffic, nor even for measuring real costs.

true...however it will show you the relative search volume for particular keywords. One would assume that that google search frequency atleast loosely correlates to type in traffic for particular keywords.

Know of any other methods?

Not in my five years experience with AdWords, but YMMV.

One thing to check on google adwords is whether people are searching for your domain name + .com

I.e. if your domain is PerfectRefrigeratorWidgets check to see if anyone is searching for PerfectRefrigeratorWidgets.com Unlikely in this case, but I have found some good traffic domains this way actually.

you don't think their is a correlation between the google search frequency for a pair of keywords and the type in search frequency for that same set of keywords?

in other words if google shows a relatively high search frequency for say "toy dolls" . Wouldn't one assume that the domain toydolls.com receives a relatively high amount of type in traffic?

Or am I assuming something here?

that's interesting...it seems that that would mimick the type in traffic effectively..

I think that a type-in domain with lots of traffic probably would have a high number of searches for those keywords, but not all terms with a high google search volume necessarily get any type-in traffic at all...if only they did

I guess type-in habits are just a lot different than search habits...

Wordtracker (results available at estibot) is supposed to be more reliable for predicting type-ins, but from what I've seen, you would need a pretty high number (1000's) to expect even moderate traffic.

other than google, wordtracker and overture which is not updated you can't really check the natural traffic of an unregged domain hence this is one of the advantages of buying from someone over hand regging.

On a side note, you can use Dynadot.com for your reg's. They allow deletes for credit for tasting. I have used them for a year now and prefer them over everyone else. More importantly I don't think they sell their search results so you don't lose domains you are considering. Lost several at Godaddy.
