This was all just a matter of time.

Horrible news for some people who buy up .com's, park them, and hope of just reselling them later at a skyped price.

What did you expect from ICANN? When start up companies cant even buy their domain for less than several thousand $ from those that call themselfs domainers.

ICANN is helping the developers with this one and the business owners who want to have a good domain still.

elfsites is an unknown quantity at this point

Remember that even if Company can get .company, they will still go ahead and get company.com just because that's what many people expect. So I don't think it will change much for .coms

Btw ask people you know who aren't tech savvy if they know about even established TLDs like .info or .tv and 99% won't even know it was a valid extension. So until this new system becomes mainstream it will take many years, so companies will keep getting .com

Am I understanding this right that one company will be able to own a whole extension? And are they allowing single and two character extensions? it seems crazy that there would be hundreds of .tv domains and only one owner of .tvs or .tv1.

Does anyone think this might actually help the value of other extensions, since people will get more comfortable with typing in something else besides .com at the end of their web addresses? I'm kind of leaning that way...

There wont be tvs or tv1 as they are to similar to .tv. Its not like any random person can get an extension neither, unless you have like $xxx, xxx

exactly what I have been saying to everyone, in fact one person listed .travel amongst a few others as a possible successful new extension without knowing it already exists, that pretty much proved my point right there and then.

If anything I think this will basically make the existing extensions, especially the Big 3 (COM/NET/ORG) more desirable. It is not like this is happening by popular demand. I would bet 95% of computer users have never heard of an extension other than COM/NET/ORG.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/488342-boycott-icanns-new-domain-name-extension.html

The only situation I could see it being effective is with a .xxx or .sex extension.

Kate has a point here. dotTravel was never released to the general public - had it been, domainers would have hoarded the names, certain that they will become immensely valuable.

Every time a new extension is introduced, it's the hand-regging domainer who loses and the registrar wins.

Not every new extension is bad, I have never had or wanted to have a .mobi or .asia but I do have 3 .me as I think it is a good extension and I think there might have been a market for a .blog but perhaps .me has taken that market. Only one of the new extensions that will be good is .xxx or .sex as has already been mentioned many times before, but it would take a long time IMO to be successful.

great thread

I detest icann for many reasons and this latest "cashing in" is added to a long list of icann stunts and incompetences !

non profit organisation huh? anyone seen their books? - already bulging - this is merely yet another example of icann going for the BIG BUCK

If this was the stock market it'd be called "massive share dilution !"

When will icann stop? when theyve bled everyone dry and ended up with a million extensions?

2. The Internet wil expand but the use will become more parochial. As China and the sub-continent dominate the Internet, botique private Internets will sprout up specific to certain countries engendering a jingoistic approach.
Businesses may want to have access around the world, but the majority of people can see no reason to be connected world wide.

Conduct an empiical experiment...and not with people from this forum, as they are all Internet saavy and wired or connected, if you will. Do this with regular people on the street.

Ask them them 3 questions:

1. Is it important that YOUR Intenet is linked to other coutries all over the world?
2. Why is it imporant to be linked to these countries? Now, here is where the answers will slow down. They said " yes " because they heard this is good but they really don't now why.
3. Lastly, what coutries are they in contact with on a regular basis?

Probably a silly take on the matter to most of you? Well, I am a businessman whose experience predates the Internet by a substantial period. Do I use it? Absolutley.

Do I need access to foreign nations? No, I do not.
Do I use it for access here in the U.S. Absolutely,

But f it went away, I would be back to doing business only in NJ. like I did before the Internet.

They point that I am making is that unless you are are an International business, very few of us have a real need to be linked to other coutries.

The Internet has given people a lot of electronic pen pals but little more than that.

Ask yourself, " if the Internet went away tomorrow, how woud my business life, NOT social lfe be effected? "
They answer to 98% of us would be: " Very, marginally. "

And in a week we would be back at our fax machines, going to the post office or calling FedEx for a pick up.
