Well the price of phones is not the only issue. The price of bandwidth is probably a bigger problem, but yes it does herald the birth of the mobile internet.

I don't think Apples presentation of load times was a good decision when you are discussing .coms. Here...let me post it for you.

If I worked for Apple and was telling people that you had to wait an average of 21 seconds for a .com site to load, I would be ashamed to even print that statistic. Yeah it's better than 33 seconds or 34 seconds. But, it takes a .mobi 5-10 seconds to load and thats not using 3G. I think the iPhone is great but if a site is taking that long to load then I move on and consider that site un-user friendly.

Well...its not letting me paste it in here. So if you are interested in seeing it search for the presentation.
That is shocking. Even 10 second is way too slow!

Well...Rubber Ducky, the good news for you is Apple has just give you a tool to load .mobis in about :02 - :05 seconds!!! This means that you can visit four or maybe even more sites in the same time that your precious .com is loading. Let me "Count" that out for you. 1 .mobi aaahaaahhaaahh 2 .mobis aaaahhhaaahhaa 3 .mobis aaahhhaaaahhaahh 4 .mobis aaahhaaahhaaah.

when people bring up these silly iphone arguments... i honestly feel like im living in 1993 again, where people do not understand certain things about the internet..... in this case it is the internet-on-mobile-devices. so new, so misunderstood....

some people are so simplistic with their ideals... its almost... well, cute. its always good to stick to what you know, or ask questions rather than assume.

Hi, my name is Matt and i own an iphone and several hundred dotmobi domains. i must be a walking paradox.

Yes, iPhone is doing wonders to bring the mobile web to the consumer market in the US. As for bandwidth, iPhone customers get it for a fixed rate and as that becomes the norm it will grow even more. All indicators point up in regards to mobile web and recent stats like bofa.mobi reaching over 1 million mobile banking users and getting over 4 million account session in May 2008, awareness of .mobi is growing every day.

We will have come full circle when my mobile web browser gets a 'number' pad and earpiece integrated into it. With it's 17" screen, I don't have to do much scrolling.
If I could just get it to ring and dial up, I could ditch the cell-phone.

and the likes of
wapedia redirecting their .org to the mobi

page rank 7, alexa 10k and a climbing
get used to seeing mobis in the alexa top 1k, they're gonna be all over the joint like a rash

in the same way also half the .coms in the top alexa are adult, i have no doubt the same for .mobi adult domains when they get going

porn.mobi was bought by one of the top adult guys and he's developing 'her' out at minute
keep your eyes wide shut naysayers

not so fast...

the phone is now only $199, but AT&T is raising their data plans for new customers by $10/month, so $240 more over a two year contract - http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-33478

...And, as the Why.mobi? website gets linked to thousands of .mobi sites - and posted on blogs all over the net....and elsewhere....The word gets out - everywhere....that...:

....mobi = mobile

It begins...

Now, we'll see if .mobi 'declines'...

Yes you are quite correct: New iPhone 3G Costs More Than Current iPhone:
When Steve Jobs took to the stage at WWDC and proclaimed that the iPhone 3G would cost just $199, everyone thought that they were saving $200 in the process. After all, the current Apple iPhone retails for $399 (assuming that you can still find it in stores). $200 is $200, right? Well, it turns out that this new price point is actually more expensive than the previous offering.

You see, the old iPhone had a minimum monthly service subscription of $60. With that plan, you could get in some data, some minutes, and some text messages. With the pending launch of the second-generation Apple iPhone, AT&T and Cupertino are raising the minimum bar to $70. Over the course of a two-year contract, you're looking at an extra $240 worth of monthly charges. If you add to that the $199 price of the iPhone 3G, you're looking at a total cost that is $40 more than the outgoing version.

Further still, it is not possible to purchase the Apple iPhone 3G without latching onto a contract, so it's not like you can unlock and hop over to a competing carrier either. Apple (and AT&T) smells monopoly, methinks.

That's not a mobile phone anymore then is it? With a 17" screen.
Try fitting the following device into your pocket for instance

My other mobile device fits my pocket fine. Hate carrying 2. Not gonna look at a 4" screen, so the correct solution is to get a dial-tone on my Dell. Then I can talk as i browse with only one mobile device.

I guess if you have 17" pockets there's no problem.
