I guess not. The crawlers recognize <b>'s and <strong>'s and "pay more attention" to those. The text in the <span> will be treated as -regular- text.

Also to add the validation of the document. Some tags don't validate if not used properly. But as google.com itself doesn't validates. I have stopped worrying about my pages being validated
