Noob SEO question

Can/will the relevance of an extension to the words in a domain have any bearing on the SEO friendliness of a domain name?

E.g. tvprogram.tv, Indianhotels.asia

yes, especially if the website is hosted on an asian server.

I'm a little suprised to be honest, I would have thought that search engines would look at the domain/sub-domain words & maybe give more value to well known extensions, but not look at the relevance of them to the domain.
