Your Take on .in Domains

Hi - I was just wondering what everyone thinks of the .in ccTLD? I am finding many nice 4 and 5 letter dictionary words. Are these worth the reg? I really have not focused on this area and would appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

I think they are good for the future too when Indians start to get into domaining in a serious fashion or businesses realize the importance of having the .in - unfortunately they cost at least $14 each at the moment. So if you have the funds and can wait for the buyers to come along I see good generic .ins as a one-way bet.

Depends.. I personally spent over $100 on a 7 letter past tense verb .in last week. I am a developer though and plan to make my money back. If you develop these domains, I'd say its worth it. If you just wait for the domains to increase in value, you could be waiting a long time. Yes, people in India havn't realized the full potential of the internet yet perhaps.. but you have to look at the average income of people in India. I'd say you will get 10 times less at least for its .com counterpart. Even "premiums" etc. Of course there are exceptions, but I doubt Indians will give up a year's wages for a silly domain.

Some Indians are extremely rich - the richest guy in the UK is an Indian - I think 3 of the top 20 richest here are Indians - and there is a family in Mumbai in the process of building a 2 billion dollar home in the middle of Mumbai - there are also lots of software engineers in India and as somebody told me the other day India is in the process of laying cables all over the country for broadband access - with a population of 1 billion + they have a middle class about the same size as the whole of the population of Europe - there have been some large .in sales the largest being poker.in for $60K - so this could be the ideal time to buy decent names for reg. fee although even these are becoming hard to find - of course there is the problem of how long you have to keep renewing them and whether to develop them - but I think it is a risk worth taking

.IN having a $14 renewal fee is dumb, because its hampering its prosperity and access to people. Yea i believe it will be a good TLD, but i agree with toilet monster- its all about when that will happen. In the mean time/mid term, i predict .co.in(having half the renewal fee as .in) will keep gaining on .in more than people think....

Personally, I don't think $14 and $7 registration fee really matters here.
As you can find that .co.jp is much popular than .jp in Japan, even through it has a higher renewal fee. The main reason is the policy there that only allows a corporation to register .co.jp. Interesting things is that people like .co.jp more because they can usually find a official site with better contents.

No offence, but I believe that the value of domain is based on end users, instead of domainers.

TBH I don't own a .in domain - and that's mainly because I don't believe it's a good investment except for a handful of the usual premiums like poker, real estate, etc. which have potential.

advaita, after reading your explanation I'm now completely convinced that it would be a whole lot better to invest in a .cn than a .in.

Those who can't afford .ins should surely invest in .cns

It really all depends on your plans for the domains you may have, if it is purely to sell onto a end user, provding you do your research and promote your domain and do your homework then the reg fee should be worth it in the long run.

If it is purely for your own personal use then you have all the marketing ways to generate income for you.

All the best

Agreed. No matters what extension it is. We should have a solid plan before buying it. I always believe if I personally don't want to use the domain owned, others will not appreciate it as well.

Great feedback regarding this cctld! I see lots of users registering English dictionary words. Will these have value or should people register Indian dictionary terms vs English?
