Worse case is that .mobi turns into just another tld -- then, it's a matter of where it falls --- I would guess it would end up in a .info-like market -- the perfect fits will do well. Brandables and such -- not so good.
I'm going to leave the cell phone, browser technology and advancement in coding talk for now.
I'm going to address the goal of the .mobi
Any person going to .mobi is supposed to feel safe as .mobi is supposed to be a tld that supports mobile device friendly websites right?
I've gone through first five pages in google for only .mobi sites:
"site:.mobi"
I've input all the 50 sites in mtld emulator
Here are the stats:
3 are mobile device friendly websites
1 is a mobile device friendly for sale website
46 are not mobile device friendly/doesn't load
I think the mTLD should enforce their rules better imo.
I have been advised not to post in the .mobi section due to excessive fighting that has occurred in the past. I can see why now.
And at that "Such insight from those that ask for 'Free domains'.." statement. Haha... I don't free domains and I don't ask for them in my sig. I don't need any names. But someone have me 7 domains the other day, that I can now sell for about $50. Those who don't make opportunities available don't receive the reward from them. I have thousands of dollars in domain names. I have thousands in the stock market. I have thousands in the bank. I have thousands invested in various things. No need for me to get free names. But why not? I mix my sig up all them time. This is just what I decided to do with it for the past little bit.
So don't go lowering my reputation and making my statements worthless just because you don't think I have enough money in the dn market to go anywhere.
Ok, so you come into the mobi forum, trash it and challenge it with your 'I can show you's', then when you get asked to show or prove your stated reasonings, you go and blame things on 'fighting in the mobi section' and huff off. Good Grief. Read your own postings and see who got riled up in their posts!! yup.. you!
I think there has been a correction indeed and the hype has settled a little bit. I have to say the constant cheerleading was sickening
Now it looks like a lot of companies have no intention of switching to mobi, so I think the extension will not be a gold standard in the mobile space like .com is. And it will be remembered as just another TLD.
Here is 20 for ya. Some pretty big names and this was just 5 minutes of research and only for mobile version..imagine the m.domain.com's too. You're assumption that he he doesn't want to argue means his argument is wrong is false.
The top 15 (all I tried) alexa sites from USA...NONE use mobi. Some redirect to an mdot version and others to a /mobile. But NONE...not one..uses their mobi. Some don't even own their mobi version. A few don't even resolve.
My favorite...MSN and LIVE. Wasn't Microsoft a mTLD "backer"? lol
Your handful of companies convinced to use a mobi doesn't amount for much in the grand scheme of things.
If someone wants to waste more time...go through the rest of the Alexa top 100 and see how many use a mobi.
m.existingdomain.tld is not going anywhere, nor will .MOBI be vanishing. Both a perfectly valid options for URLs and will continue to be. IMHO the former is a better fit for websites with an existing Internet presence, while .MOBI is perfect for new projects that are mobile in their focus.
So in that respect, .MOBI is not a thing of the past. It's relevant to today's Internet as one of several options for developers of mobile websites. Despite mTLD's effort, there won't ever be a single standard that everyone adopts.
Why are people so bitter over just another TLD? I mean .mobi is just a regular TLD with no purpose right? But who cares if .mobi is Global and Mobile at the same time?
Why do people fear .mobi? That is the main question...??? And for people that say there is no need for .mobi (only proves that they are scared) (no offense) But Scared of What????
That said Basicly theres no need for any other extenstion since a .com can do that as well with any other extension! But guess what....Some people missed the boat!
thats what i dont understand and why i avoid posting here
thats why mobi section isnt so good as it was before
i dont have problems when i read people think it wont succeed nor when i read they say it is junk and bla bla bla but then i feel these people are afraid of the competition other good extensions will have within 5-10 years as they just say it is junk without providing any data
but when they provide some data they forget .mobi was launched in 2006 not in the 80s or early 90s...
Let them know what you just said here and they will see that people are paying attention.
For accuracy, I have been told that the transcoding is actually done by the phone carriers, mainly Vodaphone and Sprint PCS. The .mobi names are automatically whitelisted because they are intended to be viewed on a mobile phone. So it is a trustmark issue and not a technical issue.
One other thing: I really don't understand the fighting on here at all and never did. I like mobi, I have a mobi blog, and I think there is potential for the future. Some people don't agree. So what? What is so polarizing about this? I don't get it.
Why are people so elated over just another TLD? I mean .mobi is just another possible use for mobile websites right? But who cares if mobile or mdot is the same option at the same time?
Wow guys. Didn't mean to start such arguing between members. Thanks for all of your opinions, I will take each one into consideration. Time will tell what is in store for our mobi domains.. there is no point in arguing.
I have decided to develop one of my .mobi's and test the waters. I will let yall know when it's up and running!
they're not labrocca, just those who have no life and like to go into threads of extensions they despise get that feeling, because they are 'alone'.
On the mdot/mobile question, again only those that need to keep griping about it and bringing it up. oh.. like you!
Also you only gave 20 examples above on the mobile alternatives. (which must be pointed out, shows the simplicity of only having to remember all the various choices and chances one must go to to get the right one.) The criteria was 10+minimum per mobi name. You still owe us 20 more names. And if you're going to keep up the secretarial duties of the others that this was directed to, you should at least do the job at hand in full!!
