Free websites - how do they make money
 

I read in the newspaper here today about the developer of a Norwegian website (I'm from Norway) - He is now good for/earned about $12 million. The website was to developed 2 years ago and is completely free. How is it possible to earn so much money on a totally free website? I mean - I haven't seen any google adsense on this website, but of course, there is some advertising. But advertising alone can't earn him $12 mill?

I have also heard about many other free websites that earn hundreds and thousands of dollar each month even though they are totally free. How? Can someone please explain? I'm curious and absolutely want to learn more.

Maybe he had such a great idea that some big millionaire bought it from him.

If he has a lot of traffic he probably has paid advertisers.

I would think just the ads i mean thats alot of money but thats the only way i could think.

Pfft heck yea. I wouldnt mind making 1 million in 1 year lol. But 12? wow. Id like to get some pointers from that guy!

Likely earning with back end advertising deals , perhaps subscribers, as well as the CPM ads

Part of the site could be free but also it could have a product for sale. To make 12 m you need many sources of revenue.

I think he has a good community build around his site. If you have a great community (as for example that girl who offer in her site templates for myspace accounts) your site worth many milions :)
