I wouldn't say that one particular niche is always hot. Right now from what I'm seeing is anything to do with Finance, refinance, loans (as you mentioned) BUT saying that, anyone can reg 20 domains with those words in them but they have to be understood by the "internet general public" as typed in traffic. So if you had (again, I apologize if I actually mention anyones domain out of context) RefinancedLoans.com and you had the choice between selling that or BlueGrassFinance.com, which one do you think would have a better chance? Common sense right? Use common sense terms when buying or fresh regging a domain.
If you want to know whats the hot topic of the year, watch the news, read the newspapers, see whats being said everyday, every broadcast and make your judgements from there. Again, it's up to you which way you swing with your domains but what I'm saying is just my opinion, always remember that

Ignore stuff like that because if it sounds too good to be true, it normally is. Follow the guides and help files in "domain newbies" section here on namepros and see if that answers your questions. If not, please ask any questions you have and myself and others will try our best to answer them for you
I think everyone has done that at the beginning (domainer or not) but the difference in losing a few $$$ or earning serious money is in learning what to do and how to do it, and that is why I really appreciate your guide and the main reason why I'm here.
Excellent points.
Looking forward to seeing part 2.
And yes domenigo, I did not check what the link was all about ...but every domainer and/or "noob" should be aware of the schemes and scams targeting domain registrants. Take any unsolicited e-mail with a grain of salt;especially ones with:
a) Links for you to click on a link to see one thing or another
b) Urging you to get a domain appraisal, supposedly someone is interested in buying.
Not all are scams, but unless or until one is able to discern, it's probably best to just err on the side of caution.
Finance related domains are the best domains to develop. Generally most of the top paying clicks come from this field from Real Estate/Loans/Stock Brokers/Banks.
If you can get a keyword rich domain in a top extension (COM/NET/ORG) that makes sense you are sitting on a gold mine if developed correctly.
Finance domains are pretty hot right now especially because of the economic climate BUT again, be careful in what you choose for a domain. Just because it makes sense to you, doesn't mean its going to make much sense to the end user. One other thing to remember is that even though a reseller might understand the domain or what your line of thinking on the domain is, the ultimate goal is to get the domain in the hands of the end user. Might sound like common sense, it is!!
i had been into this two years ago..but was up with studies...so couldn continue...
great advice....
learnt a lot.....can you tell me if big domain names (.com) worthy?
like for example herbalifewarehouse.com??
what do you suggest?
Hi Rhinoz
Those are some great posts. Im a "noob" as well. However, I have a question for anyone that can answer. We all see these domain name appraisal tools on the web such as Estibot or Nameboy. Are either of these tools reliable? I have used both and the outcomes are COMPLETELY different. Neither places appraisals are even close to one anothers. I am still learning an awful lot and have sold 2 doamins via SEDO recently (neither of which I would have thought would ver sell) Funny how that works. Any advice is greatly appreciated !
With Estibot and Nameboy, I would take the actual value and ignore it, thats just me though. But what I would use is the number of searches, in title and frequency to determine the price, also the overture and wordtracker stats.
Price is also speculation on what someone else will pay. You may have a domain that you think is worth 50k but in reality is worth $50 and vice versa, but saying that, do your homework, research what similar names have sold for in the past, a history if you like and always remember, use your fellow domainers for a true value of a domain, or at least an average price.
Ok, I have to stress this. In the last 2 weeks, I've had pm's, emails and instant messages from people AFTER they have read this thread plus other NOOB threads on this forum and they are still hand regging domains that just don't make sense. I'm not going to name any names because I wouldn't want to embarass them as we are all in this together to learn.
Had 2 people already within the last 2 days hand reg names that contain 6 words. C'Mon people, you say that you've learned alot but then you go and do that!
I'm not trying to be harsh BUT if you want to waste your money on such a hand reg, I'll set up a paypal account that you can just throw your unwanted money into. I guarantee that account would have $10,000 in 6 months or less!
Your domain portfolio is like a car lot, you hand pick what your want to add to your inventory, you polish, you market, you sell your inventory. Stop adding the 3 wheeled rust buckets to your inventory! All that does is make people think that all you have is just junk and your reputation as a great domainer goes downhill and people will be more likely to go to the next "car lot" to make their purchases!
The Moral of this post, "Get rid of your junkers", I know I am. Sure, I've got some, thats why I'm getting rid of them because I'd rather have a Cadillac dealership than a "Rhinoz Wrecks" dealership!
@ rhinoz Many thanks for your guide I found it really useful and hope to put to good use very soon, got a lot more reading to do but have bookmarked this thread for reference. Excellent read, here's wishing you good fortune with your picks.

Here's 1 more tip that might surprise alot of noobs but not the seasoned domainers.
Do NOT price your domains at end user pricing on a domainers forum. Why? Easy, 99.9% of the people on these forums are wholesalers/resellers so why would they pay you retail for something and have no chance of reselling it?
Read the Marketplace section on any domainers forum and see not what the domains are listed at, but what they sell for.
Think smart, not greedy. If you think greedy towards a wholesaler, the only person you are doing an injustice to is YOU!!
